Surprise! Mandatory Paid Sick Leave Has Real Costs
Cascade Policy Institute ^ | August 22, 2013 | Erin Shannon

In March, Portland’s City Council unanimously voted to enact mandatory paid sick leave for Portland businesses. While the law sounds well intentioned, it is poised to hurt the very employees it’s meant to help and may damage the businesses that employ them. A recent survey by the Employment Policies Institute (EPI) reveals that Seattle’s 2012 paid sick leave ordinance is increasing the cost of doing business there. Our law could have similar results in Oregon when it takes effect in January.

Oh please tell me it isn’t so. You mean that it actually costs someone when there is no production?

I’m shocked, shocked I tell you to learn that the cost of these humanitarian mandates has to be paid by someone and that money doesn’t just fly out of the butts of unicorns and happy monkeys.

They never learn because they never suspect. This will go on until it is stopped.

If you reward behavior, you will get more of it.

If you pay people to take time off when they are not feeling well, you will get more people choosing to stay home on sick leave rather than tough it out.

If you demand people see the doctor to qualify for paid sick leave, more people will go to the doctor for minor ailments.

Why is this so hard for liberals to understand?

Too late, I want the USA back. Government has declared its independence from us, the people. It's now doing the only thing it's ever done halfway well: looking after the interests of government.

My neighbor is a woman in her fifties who drinks and smokes to excess. She’s a state employee. Recently, she said, “I’ve earned me a week of sick time so I’m just gonna take next week off drunk and call in sick.” The state employee sick leave is much more generous than any private company I ever worked for. I have known both those who abused it and those who almost never used it. But, I’d have to say anecdotally that it is more abused than not.

I’ve known people who consider mandatory sick leave just to be more vacation time.

I was a state employee years ago and during my last few years, I became so fed up with it all and I used mine up as fast as I could generate it.

Other favorite people who could come and go at will maxed their time and seemed perplexed about what to do with it.

Seattle’s 2012 paid sick leave ordinance is increasing the cost of doing business there.

I wish they had put in an explanation linking cause and effect. How else could a liberal follow their reasoning? What is the mechanism by which increasing the cost of doing business increases the cost of doing business?
