When Shoppers Skip Wal-Mart, You Know They're Rolling Back On Spending
Forbes ^ | August 15, 2013 | Abram Brown

If discount every-day necessities can’t tempt shoppers into stores, it’s a clear signal that consumers feel stifled by a tough economy at home and overseas.

That’s the picture provided this morning by Wal-Mart’s latest quarterly report. The world’s largest retailer cut its annual profit and revenue outlook and reported second-quarter figures that missed expectations.

Wal-Mart, operating 10,800 stores across 27 countries, is seen as an economic bellwether because it’s a go-to spot for so many households, where they shop for groceries, home supplies and gasoline. Nonexistent wage gains and a sluggish recovery are hampering spending in America and Europe, while slowing growth in developing companies keep the emerging middle classes there from spending much, too. Listen to Wal-Mart CFO Charles Holley: “”The retail environment remains challenging in the U.S. and our international markets, as customers are cautious in their spending.”(continued)

I am not elitist at all. The Walmart where I live attracts dirtbags for miles. When one walks through there, it is not a good feeling.

You may like shopping with gangbangers; I do not.

Our Walmart has started to carry more organic and non-gmo type items. Since we mainly eat whole foods, I can now get quality ingredients for my family at a much cheaper price than Kroger, Trader Joe’s, or Whole Foods. We still mainly live off of our back yard, but we do have to supplement. I am considering, however, planting wheat next year. We’ll see about that.

Hey Lera. Do what you have to do. If Walmarts are not the suitable resource then avoid them. But it looks like you are cursing them in your mind... stop it. That feeds the devil. Wish them blessings even if you don’t go there.

I am not cursing them.

Not all stores are the same . In my area they are obnoxious and I get better deals and service at Publix.

And so they are, yet not every factually true statement is suitable in all circumstances for use in glorifying the Lord. The spiritual tone matters too. Just a word to the wise. Think of what good they can be, to someone else if not to you. Your thoughts will cheer up.

Good to know. I’m not anti-Walmart by any means. I’m in there several times a month. Just drives me nuts to see the store so empty.

I guess I will depart this complainfest... but not without a warning, folks. Complainfests attract Satan. They always will. Thankfests (for example most canteens here) are the opposite way.

The stores I use way up in central NH are clean & safe. They are just under-stocked more often than not.

Look around the net and you WILL SEE tons of people complaining about how bad Walmarts service is.

Not disputing that...location, location...

I will have to check prices in Seattle and Portland next time I go. Hadn't noticed any difference in the past.

I went to Walmart today and it was crowded as usual.

Three weeks ago I was in Sheridan WY at 7 PM and went to the Walmart there. It was empty except for the staff and a couple of other shoppers.’

I asked a clerk where everyone was. He said it was usually this way about this time of day and week day.

A few days later I went to the Walmart store in Farmington NM and it was crowded as it is here.

"Erin Burnett asked a guest today why is it the numbers show the economy improving but companies like Walmart reporting lower income. I think the answer is simple. Walmart doesn’t fudge the numbers."

If When the government fudges the numbers its for the good of the people... (good of the people is defined as keeping those employed by the FEDGOV in "fat stacks")

If Wal-Mart fudges the numbers people go to jail for fraud.

Say hi to Family Dollar and General Dollar, your neighborhood answer to WalMart that keeps a bit more gas in your tank and has as good or better prices on lots of things you used to get at WalMart.

One thing more: when I was looking at shirts the other day at WalMart and saw they were made in Islamic countries, I refused to buy. I’m not funding those SOBs.

(especially true if you live in a small town since Walmart charges MUCH higher prices in their small town locations than they do in bigger cities)

Not in my experience. The prices in WM in the regional resort areas are not an iota difference than those in the rural area where I live. The experience in the loca rural ones are also far superior - wonderful staff and no long lines because of ope registers.

Yesterday was the first time I’d been in Wal-mart in at least six weeks, that’s the norm. We used to go every week and seldom spent less than $80 on everything from groceries to dog food. Now I seldom spend up to $50 in that six week stretch.

We don’t shop much any more.
