Many of us on FreeRepublic are engineers. Growing up we had the space program as inspiration. It's hard to imagine that level of expenditure on a task that was about exploration and political stature today. Now we have a vacuum. Electric cars and windmills are not inspiring to the young. About all they get inspired with that is technical is gaming.

Why does Facebook need to recruit engineers? Isn’t that just a website?

If these whining rich guys are so concerned about education in this country, why don’t they fund private schools and scholarships for poor kids to escape their dismal government schools? They would rather be admired by libs rather than speak the truth.

Zuckerberg can go suck a toad.

CEOs seem to be ignorant of the fact that our universities are filled with foreign students to the point that it’s difficult for an American student to even get a spot.

The market is also flooded with H1Bs from India and China.

The curriculum for a 4 year engineering degree also includes 2 years worth of garbage non-engineering related classes. That’s a big turn off.

It’s also easier to just get a job in finance which pays more and has better hours.

Most engineers I have known are grounded in reality. Far better option than liberal arts.

Please tell me you’re not advocating massive government investment in order to inspire young engineers.

It's hard to produce enough engineers when the kids coming out of public schools are illiterate and innumerate.

Yep, I am an Aero-Space Engineer, with a BS in both Mechanical and AE , A&P/IA, CFII/MEI/ATP and type ratings.... Never will I use my engineering degree for corporate america in my life time. Being an engineer in Corporate America is a fools errand and complete waste of your talents. I left the aviation world in 2000 along with my engineering career. My pay is up and my time is valued.

Corporate America will never get decent engineers with the current pay structures and general attitude towards engineers or technical types. They are reaping what they have sown.

If I was of college age now I would go for engineering and specialize in robotics.

That discipline looks to be like it is gonna be very handy AND a whole lot of fun!

Anyone who wants more American engineers should immediately push to cut off the importation of foreign engineers.

You can have all the American engineers you want — some old, some young — if you pay them enough.

If you don’t want to pay that much, fine: you just want cheap engineers. But please don’t say “We need more American engineers” because the cat’s out of the bag: that isn’t want you want at all — you want more H1-Bs.

criticizing America for not producing enough talented engineers for him to recruit.

There's lots of talented software engineers out there. They are just not available for the prices Zuckerberg wants to pay, which is the real issue. Zuckerberg wants world-class engineers willing to work for H1B salaries.

Well, he worked so hard and stuck with his education so he should well know what it takes to be an engineer.

Engineers are not programmers. Engineers build stuff. Facebook is not stuff. It is nothing. It does not add any value at all.

America has become expert at producing nothing of value including facebook and sukkerberg.

Why become an engineer when to become a manager/executive a person only needs to get an MBA and a PMP? I mean, why kill yourself to understand engineering when you can understand next to nothing but be in charge and make bigger bucks?

That is exactly what is happening. Very few people want to get an engineering degree. They all want a simple MBA and a 12 week wonder PMP. Easy stuff. No sense in spending big bucks and major time and effort to learn engineering when the money is in “management”.

Education, for the last 40 years, has existed primarily in order to help women and blacks feel good about themselves.

America needs to produce Engineers willing to live in the insanely expensive Bay Area for not more than $75K per year.

There, fixed it.
