Citing ‘Hungry, Frustrated Children,’ Another District Drops Michelle Obama’s Lunch Menu

If the goal of the federal school lunch overhaul is to improve outcomes for children, somebody should tell its chief cheerleader -- First Lady Michelle Obama -- that it’s actually backfiring.

Officials in New York’s Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake school district have become the latest to opt out of the National School Lunch Program, citing “hungry, frustrated children plus lost income.”

“[Food service manager Nicky] Boehm and her staff worked hard to implement the new regulations, but there were just too many problems and too many foods that students did not like and would not purchase. Students complained of being hungry with these lunches and the district lost money. I'm confident we can do better on our own next year,” assistant superintendent Chris Abdoo said in a news release.

The lunch program lost about $100,000 for the school year, which is roughly the cost of one teaching position.

“Students felt they weren't getting good value for their money,” Boehm said. “The high schoolers especially complained the portion sizes were too small, and many more students brought in lunch from home.”

One example provided by the district that was a “turn off” to elementary students included canned green beans and “part” of a chicken patty on a mini croissant.

This district’s action comes on the heels of the Catlin, Illinois, district doing the same. Officials there complained the federal guidelines were too “restrictive.”

The USDA -- which manages the National School Lunch Program -- has estimated it will cost school districts $3.2 billion to implement the new Michelle Obama-inspired mandates.

That’s a lot of money to spend to make sure kids go hungry at school. Don’t be surprised if many more school districts around the nation dump this program before the new semester starts in the fall.

The horror!!! We can’t have that so we’d better cancel this whole program! Why, the school breakfast, lunch and dinner bureacracy might be put out of business!

If I had it my way, the schools wouldn’t be providing lunches anyway. I went through nine years of my own homemade lunches and I did fine. Seems to me education went downhill once the schools began engaging in the hospitality industry.

Government sticking its nose where it doesn’t belong, doing the wrong thing, wasting our money and getting away with it.

dont even mention GITMO or in order to placate moochelle the feds might mandate that kids be force fed “healthy” foods

like canned green beans

The prison system would reject it.

I just love how a first lummox can toss her weight around telling everyone else what to do, and seemingly get away with it. Then mayors jump on board, pretty soon you can’t buy a big soft drink of your desperately in need of hydration.

This doesn’t mean I think big soft drinks should be the only liquid staple, but let the public make their own choices Ms. Field-marshal, and Mr. Let Them Drink Ice.

Well, I think they should feed those youngsters mixed veggies in Aspic like they did to me in elementary school.

It is an English dish, one of the most horrible examples of English cooking known to mankind.

you had parents who either packed your lunch or at least bought decent food so you could pack your lunch

You cant even imagine what a rarity that is in the food-deserts (and parent responsibility deserts) of the cities and many 'burbs too

Soon, they will ban bringing homemade lunches to school. Some school districts have already banned PB&J sandwiches..............

You know, they not only foster parental responsibility deserts,

they RESENT the idea that YOU think you should be responsible for your children.

That’s a lot of the leftist argument when you propose that people should be responsible for themselves - they say that people can’t be responsible for themselves, and imply that you are a bigot, not for expecting them to be like you, but simply for being responsible yourself.

I don't know why I am compelled to relate this, but:

You know, the >ahem< Nazi doctors experimented with seeing how much food was necessary to keep their prisoners on the verge of death, just enough to keep a person alive. They constructed a soup made with vegetables with just a hint of meat, but no real meat, and, they made sure the soup was fat-free.

Depending on how much "essence" of fat determined if the person lived for four months or five months.

Forget Federal Lunch program. When does the Federal Wipe Your ASS program begin? Too many folks do a poor job at it. The Federal Government must step in.
