Chilean President Sebastián Pinera said an 11-year-old girl who is having a baby conceived by rape has shown 'depth and maturity'.
Chile's president has praised an 11-year-old girl after she said in a TV interview that she wants to give birth to the baby who was conceived when she was raped by her mother's partner.
"I've asked the health minister to personally look after the [girl's] health," Pinera said. "She's 14 weeks pregnant and yesterday she surprised us all with words showing depth and maturity, when she said that despite the pain caused by the man who raped her, she wanted to have and take care of her baby."
The girl was repeatedly raped over the course of two years by her mother's partner, who has been arrested and has confessed to the abuse.
"It will be like having a doll in my arms," the girl, whose face was obscured during the interview, told local TV station Canal 13. "I'm going to love the baby very much, even though it comes from that man who hurt me."
The former president Michelle Bachelet, the frontrunner in the 17 November presidential elections, favours legalising abortion in cases of rape or risk to the health of the pregnant woman or the child. "She's a girl who needs to be protected and therefore I think a therapeutic abortion, in this case because of rape, would be in order," Bachelet told Radio ADN.
"At that age the girl doesn't have a capacity of discernment; not even at age 14 would she have the mental and emotional capacity to discern this," said Giorgio Agostini, a forensic psychologist with experience in child sex abuse cases.
"So what the president is saying.... It's a subjective view that is not based on any scientific reasoning to support it."

Horrible situation, but I applaud the girl’s bravery. She’s in my prayers. Isn’t the current president one of Pinochet’s old colleagues? I read that somewhere.
From wiki: Piñera studied at Harvard University on a partial Fulbright Program, after three years graduated with both a M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics. Voted NO in the 1988 plebicite on whether Pinoche should remain in office. But (10 years later) opposed the arrest and detention of Pinochet in London, arguing that it was an attack on the sovereignty and dignity of Chile. He’s a billionaire, made his money largely by introducing the credit card into Chile. Seems to be center-right politically.
I’m sure the feminazi types will go nuts over this story. For me, the real crime here is contained in the words “Mother’s partner”. Terms like that and the reality they encompass are responsible for most societal ills these days.
“But not mature enough to understand that carrying the baby is a significant risk to her own life. “
Not with proper medical attention.
Anyway, put the rapist to death. I’d gladly pull the trigger. Let the baby live. We always seem to want to kill the wrong person.
As Persevero observed, she understands enough to know that killing the baby is wrong. Next, I hope she can understand that the best thing for her child is adoption by a respectable married couple.
Castrating her rapist and charging her mother with child endangerment would be a proper start.
The mother and rapist boyfriend should be jailed for life and the poor girl should have had access to post-rape emergency care. Morning after or whatever is used to insure rape victims don’t become pregnant.
I don't know under what circumstances the morning-after pill is available in Chile, but in the US it is now available OTC w/o prescription to people of any age. The ""boyfriend"" will probably stock up on them after he gets out of jail, so as to protect his azz in the future, and t'hell with physical, emotional, and spiritual wreckage to the girl.
I'm fairly sure that's not what you want.
The disruptions of an 11 Y/O giving birth are well known, and none of it good. If she could have fled to a hospital immediately after being raped then all the evidence would be there. In a sane world this rapist boyfriend would never see the light of day again.
One of the many troubles with contraceptives, sterilization, and abortion is that they all enable rapists to go on raping.
The availabiliy of pregnancy-ended drugs or abortion enables the entire constellation of "powers-that-be" --- including the girl's mother, the rapist-boyfriend, the "helping professions"-- to cover up abuse that goes on for years.
If this childbirth definitely gets this girl out of that situation for good, the baby might even save the young mother's life.
If the girl is at 14 weeks, there's no reason she wouldn't -- with normal pregnancy management -- have a perfectly normal birth.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not recommending pregnancy at 11. I'm just saying that young mothers are often at the very healthiest point of their lifetime. They are typically free of most of the pre-existing conditions which complicate older women's pregnancies --- hypertension, Type II Diabetes, cervical incompetence or pelvic floor prolapse from previous abortions, chronic liver or kidney disease, congestive heart conditions, obesity.
With competent medical support and good prenatal practices (including nutrition, childbirth education, and relaxation techniques) -- this brave girl and her baby should both be fine. God bless them both.
