In a recent interview, former Alaska governor and GOP vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin indicated she was open to leaving the GOP and starting a third party. After expressing her enthusiasm for the name The Freedom Party, Palin went on to say this:
If the GOP continues to back away from the planks in our platform, from the principles that built this party of Lincoln and of Reagan, then yeah, more and more of us are gonna start saying, You know, whats wrong with being an independent? Kind of, with that libertarian streak that much of us have. In other words, we want government to back off and not infringe upon our rights. I think there will be a lot of us who start saying, GOP, if you abandon us, whatwe have nowhere else to go except to become more independent and not enlisted in a, one or the other of the private majority parties that rule in our nation either a Democrat or a Republican. Remember these are private parties. And no one forces us to be enlisted in either party.
Lets begin with this observation: Ms. Palin is a fierce opponent of immigration reform, and any openness by the Republican leadership in the House would move her a good deal closer to abandoning the GOP. Which of course makes her reference to both Lincoln and Reagan odd, since Reagan was an advocate of amnesty and as president granted it to millions of illegal immigrants (I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and have lived here even though sometime back they may have entered illegally, Reagan said in his 1984 debate with Walter Mondale).
As for Lincoln, in a new biography on him, Rich Lowry points out that Lincoln was broadly pro-immigration

Depending upon how his name was pronounced as a kid, it’s a no wonder he might have a chip on his shoulder..
...because he needed more recruits and conscripts for the Union Army.
NONE of the many amnesty provisions were EVER enforced!
All you need to know about ANY AMNESTY !!!!
She sure does know how to manipulate the right wing into giving her money.
She sure does know how to manipulate the right wing into giving her money.
Immigration had an entirely different perspective in the 1860s.
They make talk trash about her, but the GOP elites are scared to
death of Palin. They know Palin has the pulse of the grassroots.
Regards,
Our betters are in the process of replacing us.
At millions per year immigration, combined with millions per year aborted, it doesn’t take many years to make real demographic shifts in the population.
Seriously? Bill O’Reilly makes more money in a year than Gov. Palin has ever made in her lifetime, yet I don’t see a similar accusation from you about him. Hell, Shepard Smith is in the same boat! Same with Glenn Beck. Oh, that’s right, those are men. Never mind!
Rich Lowry points out that Lincoln was broadly pro-immigration
Lincoln was also Pro-EMMIGRATION, he wanted to send the freed Blacks back to Africa and I believe the Country of Liberia was to be the destination for them.
Praise be! There is someone who can stir the passion of ideas.
Long live Sarah Palin!
HAMMER the phones!
Fax them all!
We don’t have any more time!
BUMP to Onyx and Lakeshark!!
Didn’t Reagan claim later that one of his biggest regrets of his tenure was the amnesty support? I seem to recall in the back of my mind something to this effect.
Amen. Palin for the People!
And Reagan's amnesty was supposed to be coupled with enforcement that never happened. Yet we are supposed to go along with another amnesty before the border is secured? Won't get fooled again, pinhead.
Is this sarcasm?
Lincoln would not be pro immigration if it had meant unlimited entitlements back in his days.
The immigrants Lincoln was in favor of was the group that wanted to come to this country, ASSIMILATE, and add something to the melting pot, not the group that wanted to empty everything out of the melting pot while establishing the same kinds of corruption and separatism that existed in their home country.
Stop!
No one is against ommigration
Aahh!
Illegal immigration is the problem
Unlawfulness
