Rich Lowry points out that “Lincoln was broadly pro-immigration…

...because he needed more recruits and conscripts for the Union Army.

“Lincoln was broadly pro-immigration…"

Immigration had an entirely different perspective in the 1860s.

They make talk trash about her, but the GOP elites are scared to
death of Palin. They know Palin has the pulse of the grassroots.

Yeah, but what would Lincoln and Reagan say today about tolerating / abetting the approx. 30 million border-violators now here?

Regards,

Our betters are in the process of replacing us.

At millions per year immigration, combined with millions per year aborted, it doesn’t take many years to make real demographic shifts in the population.

Didn’t Reagan claim later that one of his biggest regrets of his tenure was the amnesty support? I seem to recall in the back of my mind something to this effect.

Reagan was an advocate of amnesty and as president granted it to millions of illegal immigrants (“I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and have lived here even though sometime back they may have entered illegally,” Reagan said in his 1984 debate with Walter Mondale).

And Reagan's amnesty was supposed to be coupled with enforcement that never happened. Yet we are supposed to go along with another amnesty before the border is secured? Won't get fooled again, pinhead.

Lincoln would not be pro immigration if it had meant unlimited entitlements back in his days.

The immigrants Lincoln was in favor of was the group that wanted to come to this country, ASSIMILATE, and add something to the melting pot, not the group that wanted to empty everything out of the melting pot while establishing the same kinds of corruption and separatism that existed in their home country.

Just another installment in Commentary's rant-o-rama against Palin.

They made their major contribution in their January 2010 issue, when they surfaced the "Jews hate Sarah Palin" meme that echoed around the blogosphere -- at least the East Coast RiNO blogosphere -- making their point.

But it isn't Palin. It's all of America across the Appalachians. Seems like a ton of East Coast people left Europe, but never embraced America. Now liberal-arts degrees from Connecticut mandarin-hothouse schools are more esteemed than American liberty itself, in the big megalopolitan ant-pile.

If anyone here cares about my background, I ALWAYS yell at people that we must vote for the GOP against democrats, even when it’s a RINO.

After decades of this, hard as it is, I am about ready to abandon the republican party over amnesty.

Amnesty for illegal immigrants is such a terrible policy for America, and against our citizens and legal immigrants, that I cannot abide this.

So I don’t care what they write about Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin could support amnesty for all I care. I’m certain the GOP is about to lose it’s base over amnesty and is going to disintegrate if they don’t stop this madness.

Hold hearings, allow a debate in our nation, stop trying to run America with the latest “Gang of 8Holes”.

I love the way Sarah Palin always manages to upset liberals and neocons just by adhering to conservative principles.

The author of this Commentary article uses the names of Lincoln and Reagan in the same manner atheists use the name of Jesus to make some point that they cannot otherwise support by claiming Jesus would agree with them, even though they will, in the next breath, claim that Jesus is really just a myth. The editors of Commentary will give Lincoln and Reagan lip service but hardly revere them the way conservatives do. So, the neocons seize on Palin's mention of Lincoln and Reagan to disparage her and pretend that Lincoln would have welcomed people illegally crossing the U.S. border and wanted to give them citizenship and that Ronald Reagan would have done the same. That, of course, is utter nonsense.

When President Reagan signed that 1986 immigration bill the U.S. had approximately 5 million illegal immigrants living here. Today the number is anywhere between two and six times that (no one really knows for sure because illegals don't fill out census forms). Then as now, the flawed '86 bill offered amnesty and increased border security but as we know, the amnesty was quickly granted but the border security enhancements never materialized, hence the surge in illegal aliens residing in our country and straining our social structures (schools, hospitals, welfare agencies, court system, prisons system, etc.). Conservatives revere Ronald Reagan for a number of very valid reasons but his signing of the '86 immigration 'reform' bill is definitely not one of them.

Neocons using Reagan's signing of the '86 bill as a rationale for the GOP to pass yet another flawed 'immigration reform' bill that make similar reassuring promises about drastically tightening border security but that, we now know from experience, will be quickly jettisoned once the illegals have their amnesty is disingenuous at best and highly offensive to conservatives. That neocons continue to bash Sarah Palin when she strongly criticizes the immigration 'reform' bill now before the House simply validates conservatives opinion that the bill is a disaster in the making for the Republican party and for America. So, again, thank you, Sarah.
