The Egyptian army has only one card left to play. Western journalists and other true believers in the promise of the Arab Spring may be shocked by the suggestion that Egypt may be headed to war with Israel in the not-too-distant future. But as the country implodes, war has become the easy way out. It doesnt matter that the Egyptian army doesnt want another catastrophic contest with Israelneither did Anwar Sadat 40 years ago when he saved Egypt by going to war with Israel, which in turn helped him acquire the superpower patronage of the United States.
So, here are the facts that Egyptians and Western reporters alike would rather not face: There is simply no way that todays Egypt can feed its own people, or fuel the tractors that harvest its cropslet alone attract tens of billions of dollars in foreign investment to grow a hi-tech miracle along the banks of the Nile. Thats fantasyland stufflike the fantasy of an American-style constitutional democracy run by the Muslim Brotherhood and guaranteed by the Egyptian army.
So, whats left? A short war todayprecipitated by a border incident in Sinai, or a missile gone awry in the Gaza Strip, and concluded before the military runs out of the ammunition that Washington will surely not resupplywill reunify the country and earn Egypt money from an international community eager to broker peace. Taking up arms against Israel will also return Egypt to its former place of prominence in an Arab world that is adrift in a sea of blood. But even more important is the fact that there is no other plausible way out: Sacrificing thousands of her sons on the altar of war is the only way to save Mother Egypt from herself.

I agree.
No. Egyptians want their economy back, War would further crush tourism.
0bama and the CIA lost this round, but the U.S. and Egypt won.
What a stupid question
What a stupid questioner
Journo malpractice
Indeed. Seriously pissed.
how is the CIA a loser.
those in the know were arare of this outcome from the beginning
The CIA pros certainly knew
This is a big crock. Maybe the author is HOPING this would happen.
A lot of folks have enormous interest in keeping the ME perpetually aflame.
Go for it.
Throughout history, numerous Egyptian armies have successfully ventured outside their boundaries, capturing land and wealth, and have created vast empires. History is on their side.
1967, for example.
Egyptian and Israeli military understand each other very well.
The Egyptian military looks at the Aswan dam and thinks of how easy it would be to turn it into dust. Israel looks and thinks of the same thing.
The MB is crazy and thinks that would be a small price to pay to kill some Jews.
The Egyptian military thinks about how that would wipe many of their families out.
They reach over and firmly remove the MB from power.
maybe by ooooooohbama?
No. Besides Israel can hand Egypt its rear-end.
Beat me to it. Aswan Dam is Egypt’s self-destruct button, and I guaran-*bleep*ing-tee you that Israel knows how to push.
“I’m actually quite surprised that the Military had enough officers left over after Morsis cleanse to pull this off.”
Hopefully many will be reinstated?
Ironic, Gen. Abdel Fattah Al Sisi was appointed by Morsi.
Morsi looks like he is CIA, and the CIA supported putting him into power and using him to aid their fight against Assad in Syria...so the CIA lost.
One bunkerbuster bomb in the face of the Aswan dam and you would flush the toilet of Egypt out to sea.
Not going to happen.
The Egyptian military is a competant and profesional force. We trained them and supplied much of their harware. Yes they still have and operate alot of the equipment the Soviets gave them, but they are no longer that army. I spent time with Egyptian soldiers when I was in the Marine Corps. Many of their guys join the military for the same reasons our guys do. It didn’t suprise me to see the generals do the right thing both times. I do believe that they will not allow the MB anywhere near the new elections. They learned a lesson from the last time. I think Egypt will turn the corner and become a decent peacefull country.
Morsi is out because war with Israel was his real aim...as a MB ideologue
The Egyptian army does not want to engage the Jewish state...
They will use them early and often as they do not have that many people to lose.
Amen!
