Karl Rove: Here Are the 2 Tactical Fails That Cost Romney the Election

The GOP strategist says he tried to signal to the Romney campaign that it should change course, but they didn't follow his lead.

A lot has been said about why Mitt Romney lost the presidential election, from his failure to turn out more white working-class voters to his failure to win more of the Latino voters who did turn out. Republican strategist Karl Rove offered the latest take Thursday in remarks detailing how he tried, from his perch at an outside group forbidden by law from coordinating with the campaign, to signal to Romney's team that they should make changes in course and defend their candidate more fiercely.

"No election can be blamed on one single thing ... that's not the way politics works," Rove said during an Aspen Ideas Festival conversation with Atlantic Editor in Chief James Bennet. At core, however, "This was a tactical failure."

"Romney lost because he wasn’t willing to get down and dirty to win."

Romney lost because he came across as the rich square dad that didn't know teenagers were making out and smoking pot in his basement.

At this point, a third party with real conservatives running will probably be able to take over the GOP in 4 years.

First, this current House needs to be punished after they took 2010 due to us and then told us to pound sand.

Primary them in 2014. The Tea Party candidates need to regrow their pairs and fight back. Document and show how the GOPe treat them worse than Dems. Embarrass them.

Why are the ‘Pubs still listening to Carl Rove? He was President Bush’s Iago.
(Iago was the treacherous main character in Shakespere’s play “Othello”, for those of you who don’t read books).

I would have voted for Frankenstein rather than not voting or voting for Obama.

Carl Rove is only concerned with Carl Rove making money for dispensing advice.

Win or lose the election he makes money.

And his advice sucks !

Mitt Romney would have lost with or without Karl Rove’s help. Such a wimpy prissy butt didn’t have what it takes to beat Obama, plain and simple.

Danny - I may be wrong but I thought he said that the Romney campaign said to NOT respond (when you’re responding you”re losing). Rove said they agreed (and didn’t respond) and that that was a mistake

I think the main reason Romney lost was image. Romney looks like a stodgy old used car salesman. Then the 47% comment wiped him out. I would say that one comment did him in more than anything else.

Put Rove and Hannity in a room all by themselves ... and spill hundreds or thousands of Leggo Pieces on the floor and let the Arhitect and his lacky come up with something practical and with meaning ...

If that doesnt work give both of them Etch-A-Sketch pads as all they yak about is some fantasy .. which is orbits removed from reality.

Has Rove ever admitted via his whiteboard where his statistics were totally off base ?

The way I read it, once Romney said not to respond, Rove stopped. But Rove was already running ads prior to that apparently without checking with Romney.

I don't think the 47% hurt him that much. It was a stupid thing to say at a fund raiser. "Give me money because the odds are almost astronomical I'm going to win." lol but did it change anyone's vote. I doubt it.

I wouldn't have voted for him because he put gay activists on the judicial bench, he was a weathervane when it came to abortion, he told the boy scouts to accept gays, he wrote Obamacare and I couldn't tell a difference between him and Obama.

I'm glad Romney's not president, because I doubt much would be different and all this crap would be blamed on the GOP. They still blame Bush but that's not selling well these days.

Karl Rove: Here Are the 2 Tactical Fails That Cost Romney the Election...

Right there Rove admits he doesn't have clue one about Romney. Romney was unacceptable across the board to anyone who had half a clue.

Obviously Rove didn't and still doesn't.

We don't want a Massachusetts Liberal Karl. What part of that can you still not grasp you rat turd?

RomneyCare? Really? Good golly Miss Molly...

On the one hand, Mitt couldn’t run away from the fact that he is an eastern liberal, and that cost him a lot. Had the first thing not anchored down his campaign, the Hispanic vote and the gay vote wouldn’t have mattered in the least. That said, Rove’s boy Bush would have lost that election by an even wider margin that what happened. One of Mitt’s other problems is that he is in the same party as Bush. ...Seriously Karl, can’t you find real work?

Exactly, and you don’t “need enough to get your plans done”, you just need enough to muck up the wheels of government so they can’t get ANYTHING done.

Government not doing anything is excellent government, particularly at this point. No more laws, no further regulation, no plans, no “war on [insert pet campaign here]”. The only legislation government needs to look at for about the next 50 years is the approaches to whittling itself down and winnowing the code books...
