In a massive restructuring, the U.S. Army is slashing the number of active duty combat brigades from 45 to 33, and shifting thousands of soldiers out of bases around the country as it moves forward with a longtime plan to cut the size of the service by 80,000.
Officials say the sweeping changes would eliminate brigades at 10 Army bases in the U.S. by 2017, including in Texas, Kentucky, Georgia, Colorado, North Carolina, New York, Kansas and Washington.

More ‘lovin’ on the troops’, from The Great Imposter!
To use the deense money for ObamaPhones, Obama foodstamps, Obama Globull Warming, Obama welfare, Obama 100 million $$ vacations.
What do they mean by 'longtime'? Since the beginning of hope-n-change?
It’s a good thing we have this great economy and all these military folks will have NO problem finding a job when they’re cut loose. (Do I need the sarcasm tag?!)
Every day, this nation forgets one more lesson from the 1930’s.
F'in idiots are not even intimidating.
Arny cut back to 490K. Meh - About as many as we had in 2003 or even as far back as 1996/97.
Why not close bases in Japan, German, South Korea, Europe and every other podunk where we have troops stationed and bring those troops (and our tax money) back home?
Yeah, if you’re a riffed trooper but handy with a hammer or shovel and want or have a family, good luck to them competing with a guy living with twelve other people and willing to work for ten pesos to your dollar.
Obama and his republicrat henchman have declared war on the American middle class. They arm our enemies. They squander our treasure and are destroying our country.
They are our enemies.
Good to know. Anyone who isn't armed better get that way because zero is now making it so easy to take over this country that we will be conquered by an army of 8 year-old muslim kids using their hands in the shape of guns to overthrow us!
Freakin' idiot traitors in Washington!
Sad isn't it? We're disarming and Putin laughs at us. Obama's cutting our military and drastically reducing our nuclear stockpile while Russia's building new ICBMs, deploying a rail-based ICBM system and China's creating an aggressive blue water navy. Meanwhile Kerry sputters impotently while cutting secret deals with our enemies. Sixties radicals were always hell-bent on unilateral disarmament. They were Communists, too.
From the comments there:
“Malik_Abu_Nidal says:The existing 45 combate brigades were unable to impose “common sense gun safety laws” on a mere 20,000 Afghan shepherds, mostly illiterate folks with home-made AKs and a little det cord. Pathetic. reply
The smaller, weaker, more feminized and homosexualized the HOLLOW FORCE US military becomes, the better.
It’s ok. Barry’s civilian army will protect us. /s
We have been closing bases in Germany....
The only major unit we have left in Germany is 2nd ACR. All of the heavy units are stateside now. In fact there was an article posted on here a few weeks ago about the last of the Abrams tanks leaving Germany.
Those who don't know Christ need to come to Him.
The military is being decimated so that we will be unable/unwilling to come to the aid of Israel.
This plan could be really handy, actually. I wonder which Stryker BDE is getting the axe...?
Hopefully there won’t be an army to come after the citizens. Oh, wait! I forgot about the IRS!
Is this related to the BRAC?
This is separate from the BRAC. All of the base closings and realignments identified in the 2005 BRAC law had to be completely implemented by the end of 2011. However, this new reduction in the number of brigades could very well pave the way for another round of base closings under a new BRAC law. There have been rumblings that another BRAC was needed. This could speed things along.
No, this is not related to BRAC. This is a reduction in Army end strength that has been in the works for several years. The Obama Administration wants a smaller military so that they can spend more money on direct payments to Democrat voters. The Army always take the biggest hit when these these happen, just like they always have the lion’s share of the fight when we go to war.
Here is my summary of the cuts from another thread:
3d Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Ft. Bliss, TX
4th Brigade, 82d Airborne Division, Ft. Bragg, NC
4th Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, Ft. Campbell, KY
3d Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Ft. Carson, CO
3d Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Ft. Drum, NY
4th Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Ft. Hood, TX
3d Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Ft. Knox, KY
4th Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Ft. Riley, KS
2d Brigade, 3d Infantry Division, Ft. Stewart, GA
4th Brigade, 2d Infantry Division, Jt. Base Lewis-McChord
Also the 170th and 172d Infantry Brigades in Germany who are already undergoing inactivation.
Unaffected are the 25th Infantry Division (2 Brigades in Hawaii, 2 in Alaska); the 2d Cavalry Regiment, Germany; the 3d Cavalry Regiment, Ft. Hood; and the 173d Airborne Brigade, Italy. Each remaining brigade will have 3 maneuver battalions instead of the current 2, and the engineer battalions come back to the brigades. The total cuts include 6 heavy brigades, 5 light brigades, and 1 Stryker brigade. Expect some reflagging at battalion and brigade level as the sort this all out. The addition of the 3d maneuver battalion is a good thing, but the overall reduction of the Army makes it more likely that some country hostile to our interests will attempt to intimidate us.
And think of the “peace dividend” the democrats can now spend on social welfare programs after cutting 80,000 out of the Army.
Why not keep the soldiers on the payroll and dispatch them to the community organizer ranks?
Sorry son, you may have signed up for the Army, but you’re going into the Americorps.
ASOC, ninety to ninety=five percent of the Cold War Army bases in Europe are already closed. The only bases left are Ramstein AFB, Weisbaden which is the new USAREUR HQ, EUCOM HQ in Stuttgart and a brigade at Grafenwoehr in Barvaria. All of the V & VII corps posts were turned over to the German government. Baumholder is almost closed now. The last M1 tank left Germany about 6 months ago. There is the 2nd ACR with Stryker infantry vehicles at Graf and the 173rd Abn Bde at Vincenzio, Italy.
