Reagan’s answer to Snowden’s flight: force the plane down
Rare.US ^ | June 23, 2013 | James S. Robbins

On Sunday, NSA leaker Edward Snowden landed in Moscow on a flight from Hong Kong. The United States had asked for Snowden’s extradition, but officials in Hong Kong said the request did not comply with their laws. Snowden will probably not be allowed to stay in Russia, and reports vary on where the fugitive will go next – Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador, or some other questionable country.

The flight from Hong Kong took Washington by surprise, and it is unclear when Snowden will make the next leg of his journey into permanent exile. But the Obama administration might take a lesson from Ronald Reagan. The Gipper’s solution to apprehending airborne fugitives was to go up and get them.

On October 10, 1985, four Palestinian terrorists boarded an EgyptAir 737 charter flight for Tunis. Three days earlier they had hijacked the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro, holding the passengers and crew hostage and murdering wheelchair-bound 69-year old American tourist Leon Klinghoffer. After the ship docked at Port Said, the Egyptian government secretly agreed to let the hijackers fly to PLO headquarters in Tunis to “face judgment” (and no doubt praise) from Yassir Arafat.

The Egyptians kept mum on where EgyptAir flight 2843 was headed, but U.S. and Israeli intelligence quickly found out. President Reagan was on Air Force One heading for Chicago when he got word. Reagan was determined to bring the hijackers to justice; the Pentagon had been readying SEAL Team 6 to board the Achille Lauro but had to call off the raid when the hijackers fled into Egypt’s territorial waters. Now the Gipper had another chance. He ordered Carrier Air Wing 17, based on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Saratoga, to intercept the 737 and escort it to the NATO Naval Air Station at Sigonella, Italy.

So Snowden can now be compared with known murderous terrorists?

Seriously?

Interesting. So Regan increased the size and scope of the NSA.

And what was the result? Only the end of the threat of nuclear weapons and the demise of the Communist Soviet Union.

A good deal if you ask me. But now Bammie uses this same agency to spy on right wingers and at the same time ignore the muslim threats.

God, I miss Reagan. But then again - I miss the USA even more.

I do not consider this man a criminal.

I consider Obama, Holder and the people violating my Constitutional rights the criminals.

Exactly!

The biggest criminal/enemy of the United States is in the Oval Office. His minions infest every level of every agency of the Federal government.

Snowden is a nobody.

Snowdon is not a criminal. He has done valuable service to the Republic by exposing the length and breadth of government surveillance of American citizens.

The REAL criminals are in Congress and the Oval Office.

Snowden is NOT the problem - The Obamaites are the problem :

Jim posted today ( read this carefully!)

His daddy was a communist. His mommy was a communist. His mentor was a communist. He admitted in his book before running for the presidency that he himself was a Marxist. And that may be part of the misunderstanding and confusion. It may be that many people do not understand what a Marxist is. “Marxist” is just a fancy word for a communist. And Obama is a self-admitted, constitution-hating, spread-the-wealth-around Marxist/communist. And no one can deny that. It’s a self-evident, self-admitted fact.

And he wants to transform America. Transform it to what? Transform it from a free country to a communist state, that’s what. And he’s making great progress. Has installed his communist/fascist czars into all high level government positions. These jackbooted, unionist/communist thugs have no interest in defending the constitution. They bear sole allegiance to B. Hussein Obama and his transformative (communist) causes and will carry out his bidding without question. Even without orders.

As recent revelations bear out, all government agencies are being politicized by Obama. And the politics involved are a mixture of communism and fascism. The DOJ, IRS, HHS, EPA, DHS, NSA, FBI, etc, etc, are being used to spy on and oppress American citizens and build Obama’s enemies list, er, complete database on all American citizens.

Aided and abetted by Internet Providers, phone companies, Google, facebook, Apple, insurance companies, banks, credit card companies, etc, Obama’s treasonous fascist goon squads are building the world’s largest database and it will contain all information on all people.

This is all communications, phone calls, emails, online activity, cell-phone tracking, credit card transactions, health records, FBI records, everything. According to those in congress who are in the know, they’re going to know everything about you and know everywhere you go. You will not be able to hide.

Don’t think this unconstitutional tyranny is innocent or for “national security.” Don’t think this information won’t be used against you. Or against the generals, admirals, officers, congressmen, judges, governors, sheriffs, corporate executives, politicians, etc., etc. Obama is a commie. What do commies do with information against their perceived enemies?

What would Stalin do?

Time is getting very short.

Snowden did kill anybody and may be very instrumental in the eventual overthrow of the worst power grab in U.S. history . All power to him .

I don’t either, but it would be good drama if he were to look out the window and see a couple of USAF fighters escorting his plane!

Until the facts are known, I consider him a whistleblower. Maybe one with poor judgement, but if what he’s disclosed is true, it could be the greatest act of civil disobedience in the history of the Republic.

The flight from Hong Kong took Washington by surprise

Yeah, sure. What a surprise! Completely unexpected!

Drudge only had a headline up for two or three days saying that he was planning to fly out as soon as it could be arranged.

As to the author’s hysterical assumption, I don’t recall Reagan ordering commercial Russian passenger jets to be forced down.

The reason Edward Snowden himself has been made the distraction is but for ONE SIMPLE reason.

He has REVEALED to the American Public what is ALREADY UNCLASSIFIED information.

The NSA is ANGRY because the public was supposed to stay unaware and naive' enjoying their "bread & circuses" while the NSA infirnged on your Constitutional Rights.

As my longtime friend who posted the following on Slashdot told me directly after I stated that
it appears you released MORE information than Edward Snowden:

I wrote that days ago, but sat on it thinking about just that. The key is what I wrote is NOT classified information. It is freely available on telco specs, if you know where to look.

I'm not sure that matters to some people, but it is what it is.

Reagan would have not had to shoot down Edward Snowden because there would have been no Edward Snowden.

Under Reagan the NSA would not have uncontrollably grown to the degree that one million have Top Secret security clearances and there would have been FEW if any Top Secret clearances for private contractors let alone 29 year old high school dropouts with unstable job records.

Thankfully, Ubama is no Reagan.
Of course, that’s like saying Kim Kardasian is no Margaret Thatcher.
