The Tyranny of the 'Gay Magical Elves'

Almost overnight, the gay community has gained two new icons: Vincent Autin and Bruno Boileau, the Frenchmen who married in the southern city of Montpellier on Wednesday, in the centre of a political firestorm.

From one point of view, the whole thing was rather quotidian. The grooms wore dark suits and ties, and were married in Montpellier city hall. The ceremony was conducted by the Socialist mayor Helene Mandroux, and the music included songs by Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. If you took away the heavy security presence and the frenzied media attention (the wedding was broadcast live on national television), this was just a wedding, like any other. No sequins. No feather boas. None of that.

This lack of showiness suited the grooms' personalities. Autin, 40, works for the Montpellier tourist office. His husband, Boileau, 30, a civil servant from Essonne, near Paris, only discovered his homosexuality in 2006, when he met Autin at a gathering of fans of the talent show pop star Christophe Willem. They met; they fell in love; they married. That's all there was to it: nothing could be more remote from the world of Glee and glitter.

Which brings me to the gay novelist Bret Easton Ellis, author of American Psycho, who a couple of weeks back wrote a highly contentious article in Out Magazine entitled "In the reign of the gay magical elves".
