Senior White House staff knew of the ongoing investigation into the IRS's targeting of conservative groups ahead of the release of a report from a Treasury Department inspector general, White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday, but held off on informing the president to wait for a final report.
With the knowledge of an investigation, the White House held to a "cardinal rule" that it should not get involved in an external investigation, Carney said during his daily briefing. "No one in this building intervened in an ongoing independent investigation or did anything that could be seen as intervening," he said.
"To the chagrin of some who would have liked us to get more in front of this, we appropriately waited," Carney later added.
White House counsel Kathy Ruemmler was informed of the IG's audit on April 24, Carney said, and was told that the audit was nearing its conclusion and that a report would be forthcoming indicating that several IRS employees were involved in targeting groups with "tea party" and "patriot" in their names for additional scrutiny.
Carney was more vague last week, telling reporters that Ruemmler's office was informed of the existence of an investigation during the week of April 22, but informed of little more. On Monday, he said that some staff in the counsel's office were told of the report -- and others nearing completion -- a week earlier, on April 16.

What is needed is a Judge Sirica (Watergate fame) to give immunity/plea deals to guilty IRS agents and managers that talk and finger superiors.
Get some convictions going, and lips will start wagging.

That was exactly what broke open the Watergate scandal. But I doubt there is an equivalent of Judge Sirica today. Everyone involved will get slaps on the wrists and soft landings.
We conservatives like to criticize zer0bama for his terrible leadership abilities, but on this aspect he knows what he’s doing. Everyone who gets thrown under the bus gets a bunch of pillows, a cushy job and a very soft landing.
Of course he didn’t tell Obama - Obama already knew. He is probably the one who gave the directive. The spin doctors are hard at work.
I don’t understand why it is OK for some in the White House to know, but not Obama? Is there a specific law that specifies this? How high up in the White House supposedly knew (assuming they re not lying, and that is a big assumption).
He may not have known, honestly. I imagine he was told to give his speeches while Jarrett was giving orders.
Not that that exonerates him in any way, but it is a fairly likely scenario.

From what I can hear folks saying, they don’t even care any more whether O is SuperGenius or BozoTheClown. They are angry as all get-out about what has been happening (whether the abuse of our fine IRS agents or the arming and empowering of the Islamicist terroristas overseas , or lots more stuff)
if he ordered all these bad things, or if he slept through them all, nobody cares much about that anymore ...
what they all want is for the problem to be repaired, and fast!
ps: but if I had to guess, I would guess he’s probably a pretty smart guy ... he only looks stupid reading from a teleprompter all the time
