How Mail 'printed' first plastic gun in UK using a 3D printer- and then took it on board Eurostar
The London Daily Mail ^ | May 11, 2013 | Simon Murphy and Russell Myers

The Mail On Sunday today exposes the massive international security risk posed by a gun that can be easily made with new 3D printers.

We built the weapon, which is capable of firing a live round, from blueprints available on the internet – then smuggled it on to a packed Eurostar train.

Two reporters passed completely unchallenged through strict airport-style security to carry the gun on to a London to Paris service in the weekend rush-hour, alongside hundreds of unsuspecting travellers.

The pistol, capable of firing a deadly 0.38-calibre bullet, was produced in under 36 hours using a revolutionary £1,700 machine to ‘print’ its components. And because all the parts are plastic, they did not trigger the metal detectors all Euro-star passengers must pass through.

Last night, the train operator began an urgent investigation into the security breach as experts called for airports and public buildings to review their procedures in light of our revelations.

The Mail on Sunday pieced together the 16-part pistol – called The Liberator by its creators – after downloading the designs. They were originally published by an American university student, who proved the design works by successfully firing a bullet on a shooting range....

using “FR privilege” and not reading the linked article :), I wonder if all they did was bring a gun-shaped hunk of plastic aboard the train. No bullet, no cartridge, no metal firing pin ... was it really functional? Was there a test firing of a clone to see if it was a gun or just a gub? (with apologies to Woody)

The bullet Dia. of the 380acp pistol round is the same as the 9mmLuger .355.

.355 is the calibre, (ie the bore) of the 9mm Short and the 9mm Parabellum. The actual bullet diameter is .356".

.25 ACP? Unless very carefully aimed...not likely if launched with a Raven...

Nope. It’s 38/100s of an inch.

(Please excuse the accidental FReepmail.)

.38 caliber - ain’t that about the size of a hypodermic needle?

Actually, “.380 ACP” (Automatic Colt Pistol) is the proper designation. The bullet has a diameter of 0.355”

And the viola is used for what? A musical interlude before the shooting starts?

Good idea!

In any event, it’s “.380”, not “.38 caliber”.

I wonder why they don’t tell us how many “deadly 0.38-calbre” bullets they managed to smuggle on to the train to load this weapon with?

Case less Ammunition. Will a metal detector detect Lead Ball?I’ll have to test that out.

At point blank, a plastic bullet will kill. I’m sure that ceramic bullets are workable, too.

No the bullet Dia. is 355 expect for some lead bullets that run .356.

Look at any jacket 9mm bullet box or any reloading book and you well find the bullet Dia. for jacketed 9mm pistol bullets is .355

So, the “Mail” just confessed to multiple felonies.

What will be done about the horrendous crimes that the mail committed?

If they’re like our TSA even metal guns pass through undetected so what’s the point. Also the plastic gun is to be made with a large piece of metal inside so it is detectable... The media and Schumer conveniently omitted that fact.

I am sorry but .38 caliber is not .0038 it is .38. A .380 has a CASE diameter of .374 (which is close to .380 thus the name of the cartridge). The BULLET diameter is .355 which is the same diameter as a 9 mm. See the wiki- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.380_ACP

.0038 is NOT 38 hundredths of an inch. .0038 is 38 / ten thousands.

.1 is 1 tenth
.01 is 1 hundredth
.001 is 1 thousands
.0001 is 1 ten thousands
