Secrets of the conservative media machine [FR and yours truly mention]
Salon ^ | April 23, 2013 | By Lee Fang

To borrow a Sarah Palin aphorism, after their election defeat in 2008, conservatives didn’t retreat, they “reloaded.” Instead of finding new solutions to public policy problems or seriously reevaluating Bush’s failures, conservatives focused almost solely on new ways to communicate their old ideas. To do so, they looked to their natural allies in corporate marketing for inspiration — and they looked to the Left for imitation. The result has been a recent and profound turnaround that has allowed the Right the bury Obama’s message and dominate the political debate.

Historical right-wing domination of the media

Traditionally, conservatives have almost always dominated direct mail solicitations, retained the best pollsters money could buy and paid for the most celebrated advertising makers. Message discipline is the first lesson for any Republican politician. Talk radio? unquestionably controlled by conservatives.

Cable news? Fox News couldn’t be more right-wing and popular. The Right had also dominated the Internet for most of the Internet’s fledging history. Throughout the 1990s and for much of President George W. Bush’s first term, conservatives easily ruled online news. And much of that initial sucess stemmed from foundations and entrepreneurial pioneers such as Matt Drudge, creator of the wildly popular headline-aggregating site Drudge Report, and Jim Robinson of the news message board Free Republic. The pair formed a symbiotic relationship. Drudge, who played a role in breaking the Monica Lewinsky story, made waves in the media with scoops on the latest Clinton scandals, and Free Republic provided a platform for conservatives to share conspiratorial perspectives and to organize their own rallies and events. Many of the angry mobs hounding Clinton at public events were mobilized by Free Republic. The impeachment rally that was organized by the Free Republic, “Treason Is the Reason,” featured Republican lawmakers and writer Christopher Hitchens...

Dalton reasoned that because conservatives philosophically embrace ideological loyalty and are generally more comfortable with authoritarian, top-down communication, they would never really harness the potential of new media.

Are you kidding me, Lee? Get 100 conservatives to agree on something. It's like herding cats. We're independent thinkers. The left is all about top down. Union leadership and the "progressive" elites run the show. PCU on college campuses. Conform or be cast out.

Dalton (whoever he is) is an idiot. True conservatives are the ones who defend the constitution, our founding principles, our God-given unalienable rights, freedom, liberty, constitutionally limited government, free enterprise, self-sufficiency, responsibility, national security, border security and strong defense.

The godless liberals (actually Marxist fascists) are the authoritarians. It’s their way or the highway at the point of the fascist government gun!! Liberals, progressives, Marxists, fascists, Islamics are all multiple facets of the same totalitarian dictatorial mindset. They do not believe in limited government, self-government, individual liberty or freedom!!

And, yes, Mr. liberal, there is such a thing as Marxist Fascist. Just look in the mirror. It’s a historic fact. Lookup Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Ho chi Minh, Pol Pot, Castro, Hugo Chavez, et al, for recent examples. Not to mention the self-admitted Marxist/Islamofascist, B. Hussein Obama who dreams of spread-the-wealth around Marxist “economic justice” and transformation of America into a totalitarian Marxist/fascist state where his jackbooted private civilian army enforces HIS will and he’s not encumbered by the pesky “flawed” constitution or the congress or the free people.

Communist/fascist history and resistance by patriots (which they no longer teach in school) is repeating itself before our very eyes.

As Reagan said, our children are not born with love of liberty in their blood. It must be instilled within them by freedom loving parents and teachers. And of that we are in short supply.

Freedom is never more than one generation from being extinct.

Do not let it happen on our watch!

It’s our generation’s turn to be the resistance!!

I have two (2) t-shirts from the "March for JUSTICE" in Washington D.C., October 31, 1998.

Maybe collectors items...but I still regularly wear them.

“errors ceasing to be dangerous when it is PERMITTED FREELY TO CONTRADICT THEM”

With the right to do so, comes the RESPONSIBILITY to do so.

Yes, we had several impeachment rallies in DC where members of Congress called for Clinton’s impeachment from our stage. Congressman Bob Barr has written that the impeachment would not have happened if it were not for Free Republic.

Fang has done some interesting Norquist inquiry. I’ve quoted him a couple times lately.

Ruffini observed that progressive blogs did actual research and reporting while most conservative bloggers were “generally commentators and not reporters."

Thanks for your "commentary" on Dan Rather, Buckhead. ;p

I have also read that FR is financed by the GOP...but whoever said that must not read much here- I seriously doubt the GOP would support what most conservatives post about them here...funny stuff.

Keep up the good work!
