On May 5, 1907, The New York Times published a column written that same morning by Mark Twain on the news of his death the day before. You can assure my Virginia friends, said Twain, that I will make an exhaustive investigation of this report that I have been lost at sea. If there is any foundation for the report, I will at once apprise the anxious public. The event led to the oft-misquoted phrase: The report of my death was an exaggeration.
Everyone it seems, loves a good untimely death
So much so, the Wikipedia maintains a list of 219 famous erroneous death reports. Paul McCartney was reported dead on a radio show in 1966, with fans convinced hed been replaced by an impostor. Pope John Paul II is on the list with the distinction of being the only known triple recipient of early death news reports. And the US House of Representatives cemented its reputation as the best comedy show in town when news of Bob Hopes death was reported on the floor and broadcast on C-SPAN five years too early. And so it goes with taking news at face value.
Even me
I guess Im no different in proffering bold headlines of untimely deaths, but I do think its important not to take any data at face value. This week, the newswires are blazing with the news that PC shipments dropped 14% year-over-year. Youd think the zombie apocalypse was upon us (yes, theres a list of false apocalypses too). But when I look at the fine print, I draw a different conclusion. Note that tablets including the ones with detachable keyboards are *not* included in the PC shipments figure.

Like I do now in Windows 7. Every live person I've talked to with Windows 8 hates it.
“Change is difficult for people, even if the change actually makes things a lot simpler than before the change.”
It’s a lot like when cup holders first started coming in pickups . What do you need that for? I can hold my beer between my legs. Now I wouldn’t be caught without one. Change is inevitable.
Tablets are a real convenience and you can’t take that away from them. But when it comes to productivity imo nothing will replace the desk top or lap top.
I have all three but this 10 year old Inspiron 1150 running XP captures the majority of my browsing time even though it’s probably the less efficient device I have...it’s just an enjoyable experience out here on the porch with it.
The Amazon Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD utilizes a heavily customized version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

Nice try...there are pages and pages (probably thousands of pages) of complaints about Windows 8, but find me a complaint about the presence of cup holders in a car.
Change DOES NOT have to tolerated. From what I see on this site, people are nowhere close to TOLERATING a change in our gun laws or immigration laws. So how would you react if I told to you suck it up on Amnesty and Gun Control, don’t even fight it, because “change is inevitable”?
Microsoft's target is, I think, a form factor which appeals to me. A lightweight notebook which can function as a tablet with real computer horsepower and storage. When it matures somewhat (meaning better and less expensive) I'll buy it.
I got a good deal on a Windows 8 PC. I absolutely hated Windows 8 and got rid of the PC. Windows 8 really really sucks on a desktop computer. Might be OK for a tablet or a pad but it is useless on a desktop.
“but find me a complaint about the presence of cup holders in a car.”
Nice try again, but note the term PRESENCE above. I pick my words carefully...she’s not complaining about the presence of cup holders, she’s complaining about the crappy UAW-made cup holders in her vehicle.
(by the way, is she available?)
For simmers (such as myself) and gamers, nothing can replace a desktop system. I run FSX and Train Simulator 2013 on a 3-monitor system. Can’t do that with a tablet.
LOL, the passenger seat was empty.
Well, touch tech PCs have been around since at least 2004, the tech has been greatly improved and they work pretty well.
Win 8 was designed for the touch tech PC and works well with it.
Don’t worry about having to be idiotic and use one. The move to touch tech is still in the early stages and you’ve got a few years left on the mouse. Of course by then technology will be moving into PCs in your eyewear (which is already out there) so you’ll have to figure out how to train your eyeballs to move the mouse.
I wonder if Leap Motion’s new device will be a good pairing with Windows 8.

New Coke died with the same arguments... Win 9 will remedy this.

On a desktop with Win 8, Pokki is very handy. It give you the “start” button they got rid of and makes it easy to navigate just like in Win 7. When you are using Win 8 with a tablet, you don’t need that. I’m not a fan of the tiles on a desktop PC. But it is good to have an OS that works for both desktop and tablets, so you can use your apps on either. That is a drawback to iPads and OSX.
We have a bunch of broken Macs in the storeroom. They fall apart just as fast as a PC.
It probably could be but I don’t know a lot about how the non-touch motion sensing qualities of the device are implemented.
The Leap Motion device seems to be taking touch tech to higher levels from the Kinect technology that MS developed. Neat stuff though.
