Last month, Ford made headlines for an allegedly unapproved ad featuring Silvio Berlusconi with a trunk full of gagged, hog tied, and crying women. And now McDonald's is fielding a PR failure for an unapproved ad that went public.
The ad, found as a poster on the Boston metro, parodied mental health and depression PSAs: "You're not alone. Million of people love the Big Mac," the ad reads, next to the photo of a crying woman and an 800-number that connects to McDonald's corporate office.

This is a weird “gorilla” advertizing deal. “Accidentally” release some outrageous thing that gets EVERYONE in the country talking about McDonald’s, McDonald’s claims victim hood which gets EVERYONE talking about McDonald’s again. McDonald’s sales go up 0.5% or $800 bazzilion

Having limited experience in advertising (An uncle, retired from Madison Avenue); an advetising company (in this case, probably 2) developed the ads and submitted them to F and McD for approval.
Somewhere, along the way, the ads went public. The companies’ say they were “unapproved”.
Smart business says otherwise because ^the corporations are making the public statement (apologized)^. F and McD did not (1) force the advert company to apologize and (2) summarily fire them. Nope, they apologized and, well, life goes on?
When F and McD issued apologies without identifying the advert company or the loose-cannon-internal-company rep that gave the go-ahead, their claims for “unapproved” have zero credibility.
