Is getting worked up over Senate bill for naught?
Seattle Gun Rights Examiner ^ | 12 January, 2013 | Dave Workman

Posted on 04/13/2013 7:05:03 AM PDT by marktwain

Are gun rights activists getting all worked up over nothing, now that the U.S. Senate has voted to open debate on new gun control legislation that focuses on expanded background checks?

Pacific Northwest gun owners are engaged in furious discussions at Northwest Firearms and Seattle Guns, along with the national debates on Gun Rights Media and The High Road (here and here) forums. But is all of this for naught? Should these gun activists be burning up their emotions over a vote just to open debate?

How many people have actually read the compromise bill unveiled by Senators Joe Manchin and Pat Toomey?

Anger was ripe against several Republicans including Second Amendment stalwart Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) who voted to allow the debate to begin. While the National Rifle Association promised to record their votes, one might step back and ponder this: How else will gun owners learn how their senators feel about gun rights without allowing them to debate and vote on the record, on particular measures sure to come up in the days ahead?

Columnist Matt Towery had some interesting observations here.

Coburn and his colleagues – called “traitors” on some forum discussions – may have done gun owners a favor by setting the wheels in motion to “smoke out” who the real pro- and anti-gun members of the Senate are, including Washington Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, and Oregon’s Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley.

Gun owners seem to forget this is just Round One. A bill still must be hammered out and approved by the Senate, and there is no guarantee that the Republicans and even some Democrats who voted to allow the debate will actually vote to adopt legislation. And even if they do, that bill faces what could be daunting odds in the House.

This could work if we can get Senators on record without passing the bill.

This is just subterfuge in trying to make freedom-minded people think "well, we still have the House."

The problem is that we DON'T have the House.

Hell, we had 16 so-called Republican Senators turn traitor on us and capitulate to a cloture option that may have forestalled a win on a gungrabbing Senate bill...sure these Gang of 16 traitors will vote against the ultimate bill. But, they have already done their traitorous best and still think they can go home and say "I voted against the bill." Lying, cheating, duplicitous motherf@cking traitors!

We now have Boehner saying he doesn't need a Republican majority to do what he wants to do - will do. Virtually, our ENTIRE Republican Leadership in the House are corrupt, appeasing, crying liberals-at-heart, too pussy to fight for us.

This will not end well. Keep it dry and ready.

BTW, Matt Towery can suck it. He’s a good ole boy holdover from Jimmy Carter days. He’s so 30 years ago.

I have read the “compromise” bill - in full. This is not naught. Even before potential amendments are forced in, this is a full-out assault on our God-given rights. Anyone willing to pretend that the Constitution and the rule of law are open to debate or subject to a vote on whether they matter has crossed the line. It is not worth learning who the traitors are at the cost of risking everything - for the most part, we already knew.

I’m hoping they weigh it down with so many ammendments that neither party will pass it.

the author forgets,

IT IS THE RECORD keeping that is the goal.

now records have to be destroyed, and can not be used.

this would make it all permanent and a tee up for confiscation.

Sorry, that was NOT what the vote was about.

To change or eliminate the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution would, among other things, require 2/3 (that would be more than 66% for those of you from Rio Linda—to use a Limbaughism) of the Senators present to vote to change the Constitution so as to ALLOW government INFRINGEMENT of our Constitutional right to bear arms.

This “closure” (requires the vote of 60% or more of those Senators present) vote was to allow the Senate to pass legislation, with a simple majority (again, that would be more than 50% for those of you from Rio Linda) that INFRINGES on our right to bear arms.

So, by their vote for closure, Senators whose vote would be essential to meet the 67% level to INFRINGE on our rights have ALLOWED such infringement with a simple majority (for which THEIR vote would NOT be needed). So these devious creatures (say hello to Lindsey Graham) would be able to later say “hey, I voted against it” and fool many of Rush’s low information voters.

Well, I’m not fooled—and I hope that you folks are not fooled.

We need to pick a few of the senators and make a concentrated effort to retire them in the near future. Unfortunately the GOP in WV has a habit of picking losers for the Senate race.

I’ll still do everything I can in six years to unelect Manchin. I’m not comfortable with the chance of him being sent home simply because the man is the consummate politician and crook having ties to some of the unsavory in this state.

“Shall NOT be infringed”. How many ways is there to debate that until you start infringing?

I'll admit they did that. Now we know for sure both my Senators from AZ are pro-gun control. Good work!

The vote to put the bill for discussion in the Senate was not a defeat for we Second Amendment supporters. When the Senators vote on passing the bill is a good way to smoke out which are on our side or not.

We should hope that Senate vote falls short & the bill dies in the Senate. If it passes and goes to the House, we have to go all out to tell our congress critters NO NO NO with pressure and money to lobby against the bill. No anti-gun bill can be allowed to go to Obama.

Don’t waste your anger on the early vote and early politics, save it for the big battle. Do contact both your senators and congressman to say no anti gun stuff now or ever.

We need to pick a few of the senators and make a concentrated effort to retire tar and feather them in the near future.

People on our side simply MUST get up to speed on where we're truly at as a country, and respond to these abject treasonous attacks on our God-given RIGHTS, appropriately.

Wake up! The system has been broken for most of our lives, and has finally reached a point where it's a complete sham. The three branches of our government are violating the Constitution every day of the week, and in practice, are implementing a Communist oligarchy in front of our eyes.

In only the rarest of cases, does your vote at the national level mean anything. Besides a very few outstanding stalwarts, the Washington establishment is a coven of venal, lying, rapacious bastards, who couldn't give two sh!ts about our traditions, culture, sovereignty, laws, or our Founding Documents. They have sold out to an ideology of death, and are fast positioning themselves within the new paradigm, which doesn't include any of our ancient values, or foundational understandings.

I want to scream when I hear good conservatives and patriots talking about 'voting them out'. Good Lord, people! Wake the HELL up! Vote one bastard out, and another one takes his place. Working within the system no longer works, because the powers-that-be have rigged it to serve themselves and their diabolical agenda.

Get it through your heads that the time has come to fight back with more than blog posts, forum comments, flag waving rallies, and traditional political organizing. If our movement doesn't quickly step up to the level of the old civil rights movement, we're going to be left with one option only. None of us wants to go there, but we're going to, if we don't start making some real noise.

When the Senators vote on passing the bill is a good way to smoke out which are on our side or not.

And then what? Write thousands of nasty forum comments about them? 'Vote' against them in the next 'election'?

We ought to be putting these traitors on notice that we've got ropes with their names on them. It's the only thing they'll understand. They've assumed a dictatorial power over us which was never intended by the Framers, and will strip every last vestige of our God-given liberties from us, if we don't start fighting back effectively.
