Austria has accused the UK of being a haven for money launderers ahead of an EU meeting in Dublin, with Cyprus, Ireland, Portugal and Slovenias (potential) bailout needs also on the agenda.
The Austrian finance minister, Maria Fekter, described Britain as the island of the blessed for tax evasion and money laundering in an interview with her countrys Kurier newspaper on Thursday (11 April).
Comparing the UK and its protectoratesmicro-states subject to British lawto Cyprus in terms of hosting secretive foundations and trusts, she noted: Just as we urged the abolition of sealed foundations in the Cyprus rescue to drain the money laundering swamp, we must demand the same of the United Kingdom.

So Austria is heading towards French pres François Hollande’s tax scheme, and this is the pre-emp strike?
Why wouldn’t she ask the reason why people want to ‘evade’ paying taxes instead?
I hear from my cousin in Vienna that Austria is sore that Austrian was not adopted as the official language of European Union.
They seem to equate tax avoidance with tax evasion.

The UK needs a new Thatcher, not another Euro sycophant. I met Mrs Thatcher once, she was gracious and interested in us, people doing and going about our professions and life. She was not the media portrait people are quite happily embracing and demonising.
