As Views Shift on Guns, Reid Corrals Senate
NY Times ^ | March 31, 2013 | JENNIFER STEINHAUER

It was, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada ebulliently proclaimed, a “happy day for me” as he stood with Wayne LaPierre, the head of the National Rifle Association, in 2010 at a new shooting range in Las Vegas made possible by federal money secured by Mr. Reid. “People who criticize this probably would criticize baseball,” Mr. Reid said before firing off a few rounds.

These days, Mr. Reid, the Senate majority leader, is far more likely to meet with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York, an outspoken advocate of stricter gun control, than with Mr. LaPierre as he prepares to bring the most expansive package of gun safety legislation in a decade to the Senate floor over the next few weeks.

Mr. Reid’s evolution from a proponent of gun rights to the shepherd of legislation that would expand background checks, among other gun control measures, emerges from a complex web of political calculations that have come to define his leadership style over the last decade.

How tenacious Mr. Reid is willing to be — and whether he will extract votes one by one as he has for other big pieces of legislation — may well determine the fate of the measures.

Mr. Reid declined to be interviewed but answered questions...

--snip--

Mr. Reid, aides said, is also motivated by both the personal angst he felt over the killing of 20 schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn., last year, as well as the anger he feels toward the N.R.A., which was widely expected to endorse him in his 2010 re-election campaign but then declined to do so.

--snip--

This conflict came to the fore during discussions of changing the filibuster rules; Mr. Reid ultimately chose an approach that placed fewer limitations on a minority party’s ability to filibuster than the newer members wanted...

Yet another example of why the NRA ‘A’ rating needs to be taken with a grain of saltpeter.

There are still a lot of people around here who have repeatedly stated that the NRA *DID* endorse him.

Probably putting the final touches on another “false flag” shooting in hopes of snapping the public’s attention back to demanding gun control, while stripping every other right we have while distracted.

"Yet another example of why the NRA ‘A’ rating needs to be taken with a grain of saltpeter."

So what exactly do you want the NRA to do? Give Reid an 'A' rating because he has never gotten one from them even though he's tried hard. However, he eventually has to vote for judges like Kagan and Sotemeyor and so he doesn't get the 'A' rating. Sounds like it's working, no?

made NO difference what the NRA or any other group did.
Reid is a product of the Las Vegas mob and would have been declared the victor regarddless the true vote.

"There are still a lot of people around here who have repeatedly stated that the NRA *DID* endorse him."

Those would be the same people who have never been members of the NRA and constantly bash them. They are ignorant of the facts. The NRA has never given Reid the coveted 'A' rating.

America's views on guns are changing. We're becoming more pro-gun.

The Dem/libs have been engaging in a steady push to infringe on our right to keep and bear arms for decades. And this is how it has been working out for them in the last two decades...

And in the last two months... (Dec. 2012 and Jan. 2013)

MOLON LAVE! WE'LL BUY MORE. ;-)

What's so "complex" about "what's in it for me?"

They flirted with it to the very end, backing away after people like me raised hell about it. They also endorsed two dems in my state that year, thus ending my thirty-odd year membership.

Sorry to offend you, I am by no means a “basher”, nonmember, or nonsupporter. I did not mean to imply Reid himself got the rating (though it certainly has with others in my experience; I called the NRA years ago to clarify their use). But Reid certainly leaped at the chance to be shown with LaPierre and to try to get some shine from the NRA imprimatur. Those taken in by it are the ones who concern me.

The NRA flirts with the notion of rules that make it so Only the well to do can own guns.

SAF says We All have the right to self preservation.
I think the guy in the singlewide has the same rights as the fellow that lives in a mansion on the hill.

I followed the link and read the comments. I wish I hadn’t. I am very disappointed by how foolish my fellow Americans are. Doesn't anyone posses critical thinking skills anymore?
