Thomas Sowell to Newsmax: GOP Outreach to Blacks ‘Most Unpromising’
Newsmax ^ | March 22, 2013 | Todd Beamon & John Bachman

Economist and conservative author Thomas Sowell tells Newsmax TV that “Republicans have a decades-long record” of reaching out to the black vote in the “most unpromising way possible.”

And based on the party’s strategy moving forward, he says, not much has changed.

“I’m baffled by so many things that the Republican Party does nationally,” Sowell tells Newsmax on Friday in an exclusive interview.

Sowell, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, tells Newsmax the GOP’s current plan to woo minorities is the same misguided strategy employed decades ago by former President Ronald Reagan.

“When [Reagan] set out to win the black vote, he went to the Urban League,” Sowell said. “He was going to these black establishments as his entrée into the black public, as if the establishment owned the rest of the black people.”

Now, Sowell says, in plans unveiled recently by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, “they’re talking about going to the NAACP, which is the next thing to a fully-owned subsidiary of the Democratic Party — and that’s how they’re going to try to reach blacks.

“All they’re doing is increasing the sense that those are the blacks who matter and that they are the entryway for the rest of the black people,” he says.

Sowell, 82, whose new book is “Intellectuals and Race,” notes how Priebus discussed reaching out to African Americans in Detroit to woo them to the GOP. “You seriously think that’s where you’re going to find Republican voters or blacks who are conservative?”

Sowell says while Republicans are “wavering and moaning and gnashing our teeth” about the failures of national GOP candidates, “Republicans out in the Midwest and in other parts of the country have won a majority of the governors’ chairs.

Republicans go after the Black vote not because they think they'll win a majority of African-American voters but to convince (predominantly non-Black) swing voters that they don't have to be afraid of the GOP.

If you wanted to win conservative Black voters you'd probably go to the South, but 1) Republicans carry most of those states anyway and 2) African-Americans pretty nearly are the Democratic Party in those states, so they're going to vote Democrat in any case.

Sowell could say that it's patronizing for Republicans to ignore those Southern Black voters. Maybe it is. But it also may be patronizing to assume that one could just scoop up those voters.

Red state Democrats and blue state Republicans (to use the cockeyed color symbolism of the media) have reasons for being what they are and voting as they do. The opposing party can fight to win their votes, but recognize that they do have their reasons for not going along.

“One of the sad things is that a number of black conservatives who have gone out on a limb and have then had the rug pulled out from under them is like a conservative metaphor,” Sowell says. “You’ve got to have people who have some principles and some guts. If you’re going to go out there on that limb and then your supposed allies are going to cut the limb off, it’s bad news.

“I hope that does not happen to Dr. Carson,” he adds. “He really seems like an extraordinary man — and I would hate to see him diminished in any way because of politics.”

Look on the bright side. At least the RNC is not talking about going to the CBC to win the black vote.

Turn to the next tab in Priebus' handout...

If put in terms of political selfishness we should throw blacks overboard and go after Hispanics because there are more of them.

I was unaware of you and your book until now. Keep up the good work and stay at FR. I am webtv bound and FR gets me info from sites that bounce my browser. So I go there via mowser.com to finish articles w/o graphics. I scan 24 hrs of FR everyday and now I will look for you.Hell, I may even buy your book just to piss off other FReepers. I’ve been here long time.

Nice response, Lancey. I’m on FR a lot and it’s the first I’ve seen of Mr. Wright’s book. I hope he does well with it.

I would call it electoral pragmatism. Conservative values are much more in line with Hispanic values and we can win Hispanic votes without pandering. It seems there’s little anybody can do about that 400 year old chip on many blacks’ shoulders.

I would just like to offer one suggestion to Karl Rove:

We would do a whole lot more for Republicans, but simply being more accepting of conservative women.

Period.

Oh, very good...although many more Freepers support it, and only a few of the sour pusses seem to resent it - which makes zero sense to me.

Karl Rove and conservative women don’t mix well, and not on conservative women’s part.

Show me one example Karl Rove is accepting of a conservative woman.

The thing about Dana Perino that I noticed from watching her on Fox News is how servile to RINOs such as Roveshe is and how much she carries their water for them. She does not have a good understanding of the current situation in America and is therefore, perhaps inadvertently, being a handmaiden to American decline.

We decided a long time ago, after trying and trying to get Blacks to come into the party, that it was hopeless and we did not need them to win. They won’t budge from the Dem party and they persecute any Blacks who do. Dems love it when we fail to get the Dem. Blacks to come over because they can say...”see, it’s racist whitey.” Forget Blaks.

We need to divide Hispanics from the gangsta/criminal/underclass black racist thing liberals highlight to a Christian middle class ideal and vision - more like is of their cultures at home.

Hispanics did not come here to live with criminals and corruption and the poverty of liberalism’s broken families and ghettos. We should say so and be the party to move them up and out. We should make Hispanics a Republican stronghold in the cities in competition with urban blacks. We need to demonize Marxism which liberals call “socialism” or “progressivism.” That should be easy given the history of the ideology in practice. We should push a small business building economic effort for Hispanics.

Education is a real problem for all American children. Hispanics need better education and higher success rates and could be sold on vouchers so their kids can go to Christian schools. Most Hispanics reject liberal racism - hatred of whites. Culturally, the Christian ones are not too into hatred, are not into crime and are not into city life - ghettos. They don’t want their girls acting like pole dancing sluts, voting with their “lady parts.” Culturally, they believe in dignity and honor.

We need to be the Hispanic and white party base and let the Black racism do it’s thing with the radicals. We should isolate the democrat’s drop out, gansta/pole dancing slut thing and demonize it as a dead end street in life. I know plenty of Hispanic immigrants in Texas who are more “white” than whitey as far as family values and their dreams of opportunity and rising out of poverty. They need a voice and avenue to move into an alliance with American-Americans who care about families, freedom and opportunity. We need to push hispanic small business efforts. Hispanics will be the ones to carry America forward if we get in there and help.
