Wall Street Journal ^ | March 21, 2013 | Joe Palazzolo

Commerce has moved online. Now, the disability lawsuits are following. Advocates for disabled Americans have declared that companies have a legal obligation to make their websites as accessible as their stores, and they've filed suits across the country to force them to install the digital version of wheelchair ramps and self-opening doors.

Steaming pile of HS. I feel for the disabled, but sometimes it’s just too bad.

Maybe Gates can come up with System 9 using Braille. Those that can’t hear and can see what difference does it make?

Can someone explain how being deaf can prevent them from shopping online?

They’ve become just another victim group.

A few years a bunch of them tried to get the treasury to print money with Braille. Refused.

All they have to do is CALL the 800 number! Don’t use the fracking website!

Ridiculous. I’d imagine all that the disabled would ever need already exists in the form of talking browsers with speech synthesizers. They are only limited by the equipment and software/browsers they purchase and use at home. Indeed, everything about the internet is already ideally existing for the disabled compared to brick-n-mortar stores.

The trial attorneys made a fortune abusing ADA as they attacked many small businesses in court over restrooms, doors and counters. Websites will be the next target of attack. The government already has regulations in place that require accessibility features to be built into websites created under government contract.

If you find yourself in this box, check out Design Accessible Web Sites. It is an interesting read. The adjustments you make will be as good for normally sighted users as handicapped. It's a chore to do it right. So many web designers/implementers are barely capable of delivering functioning code. Going the extra mile for the handicapped will put them out of business.

I’m disabled. Lots of things I can’t do or places I can’t go anymore. Life is hard sometimes. Used to be a person made due.

Rather be dead than sue over it.

The deaf and blind should also be given driver’s licenses so it will be fair.

Honestly, I was not meant to live in this era. I should have been born in the 1800s.

Their comes a time when anyone in business can’t afford to cater to everyone and that’s when that person ceases to be in business.

NOTE: This does not apply to trial lawyers.

The ADA was probably written by trial lawyers.

We can thank the rabid Statist Bush41 for the ADA. He wanted a "kinder, gentler nation"

The Bush family's view of compassionate Conservatism is carried out by government force.

The elites are our betters (just ask any GOP-e puke)

Has to do with the structure for tables in HTML and other web standards. It's still possible to lay out tables in a way that's simply not comprehensible to a blind guy listening to a text translator. Some Freepers have earlier indicated there's software to FIX that problem, and if you think you'll have blind people shopping your stuff on the net, make sure you meet your market's requirements.

However, the big problem on almost all websites is COLOR, and that covers only government websites. Presumably the color blind, or deficient (all the dudes using viagra are losing blue btw) will know how to ADJUST things so that they can see all the characters one way or the other.

LOL!
You would know better than many, Jim!

My boss is physically disabled.
It is sometimes an issue to be considered, out of simple human courtesy, if walking long distances is involved.

I have no doubt that if his “disability” was visual or hearing related, he still would run circles around most people.

Oh wait, he already does pay me to do any tasks he doesn't want to do himself.

I find myself financially challenged.

Can I get the feds to force Internet retailers to sell me their products at the price I feel I can afford to pay? The "deaf scammers" still occasionally try to get me to ship them hundreds of dollars of products, using the "mandated by law" phone operaters, paid to assist the hearing impaired. Having worked in a publically traded company, I knew I had to waste my time directing them to email, lest they sue the company for "non-compliance" .

When is stupidity going to classified as a disability?
