Andrew Cuomo: That gun law I signed turned out to be utterly unworkable, huh?
Hotair ^ | 03/21/2013 | Ed Morrissey

Posted on 03/21/2013 8:44:32 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

If Andrew Cuomo has truly had an epiphany about his approach to gun regulation, it’s not really evident from this admission. The New York Times reports that Cuomo will now try to rush some changes into his banner gun-control legislation that forced New York gun owners to use magazines that no one manufactures, with even the one exception to the rule found to be unworkable (via Legal Insurrection):

In the wake of the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York pushed through the State Legislature gun control measures that included not only a tougher assault weapons ban but also a tighter restriction on the maximum legal capacity of gun magazines.

But after weeks of criticism from gun owners, Mr. Cuomo said on Wednesday that he would seek to ease the restriction, which he said had proved unworkable even before it was scheduled to take effect on April 15.

The gun-control law, approved in January, banned the sale of magazines that hold more than seven rounds of ammunition. But, Mr. Cuomo said Wednesday, seven-round magazines are not widely manufactured. And, although the new gun law provided an exemption for the use of 10-round magazines at firing ranges and competitions, it did not provide a legal way for gun owners to purchase such magazines.

Now, one might think that after having been embarrassed by his own ignorance — and in the face of a number of critics who pointed these issues out from the beginning — Cuomo would advise the legislature to repeal the bill and start over again. One would be … wrong. This New York governor has decided to correct one idiocy with another, emphasis mine:

As a result, he said, he and legislative leaders were negotiating language that would continue to allow the sale of magazines holding up to 10 rounds, but still forbid New Yorkers from loading more than 7 rounds into those magazines.

Er, what? Will the police be around to check how many bullets are loaded into each magazine? And, by the way, will criminals be deterred from loading rounds 8, 9, and 10 into the magazine? The whole idea of magazine limits is to limit those with criminal intent from firing too many bullets without having to reload, at which point the law expects the disarmed to rush the criminal rather than shoot back and hope he’s worse at reloading than they will be at beating someone into submission. How will Cuomo’s latest idea deter criminals, who will have zero fear of having a gun inspection before committing their crimes?

“Hey, let’s go rob that bank. Get your guns ready, and — oh yeah, don’t load more than seven bullets into each magazine.”

Furthermore, if that kind of restriction was at all useful, then why pass a law forbidding 15-round or 30-round magazines at all? Just pass a law that says no one can load more than seven bullets into the magazine, and voila! Problem solved, right?

William Jacobson calls this new idea “irrational and arbitrary.” It’s also dumber than a box of rocks, and anyone with a hint of self-awareness would have realized it before the press release went out.

This law was rammed through so fast and has so many holes, there is a very good chance it will tossed in total by the courts. Of course that won't stop Commisar Cuomo, he will keep ramming it through until he eventually finds a version that will pass legal muster.

They don’t repent. Ever. They never give up, they never give in, they just keep coming back and adding to the mess. It’s Rube Goldberg with police powers.

No surprise. They had to ram through a half-baked bill to capitalize on the "do something" hysteria that they fostered/. They'll issue a few corrections to show they're "listening" to feedback, but the camel's nose is inside the tent now, and that was the real goal.

Anyone know the status of the fellow who was arrested with a 30-round mag?

Is he out on bail? In the clink?

Not always, but it gives them something to check whenever you interact with one. And if you get caught with 8, you end up a felon and bye bye to your gun rights.

As far as the law making sense, THEY DONT CARE. It got passed so they consider it five steps forward. If they have to take a step back to fix something they are still WAAAY ahead. And when they take 1 step back gun owners count that as a victory for our side.

I have always wondered about the standing of the Cuomo’s with the Roman Catholic Church.

Are they still receiving communion?

Consider what Andrew Cuomo has been doing:

1) He openly lives in sin.

2) He pushed through and vigorously fought for the passage of gay marriage in NY.

3) He wants to STRENGTHEN pro-choice laws.

He and his father believe in the same things.

[[If Andrew Cuomo has truly had an epiphany about his approach to gun regulation, it’s not really evident from this admission]]

Now thaT californiarado just passed their ‘tough’ sweeping guns laws- NY will be right on her heels tryign to one-up them- this is NO longer about safety, but rather abotu trampling our constitutional rights and seeign how far they can push before the peopel will push back=- which oc course they won’t

We just had a supreme court ‘hearing a case’ about whether illegal alians have to provide proof of citizenship in order to vote in our country- thuis is how far we’ve sunk as a ‘nation of laws’ and we cna NO logner rely on even our supreme court to uphold our constitutional rights- NY and colorado are just the beginning folks- You’ll note that NOONE (except for only a handful of peopel who went largely unheard) stood up for their rights in either of these two states- the rest of the coutnry was watcvhing- and states were chomping at the bit waiting to see if they shoudl ram thropugh unconstitutional laws or not-

None of this really counts because it is all done with an eye to 2016 and cuomo’s presidential campaign, in which he will brag that he was the first in the nation to take on the gun culture with a sensible, reasonable law designed to protect our helpless children.

Wait and see. It was all about being first out of the chute.

All future mass shooters and bank robbers will be required to check in with the local police station to have their bullets counted before being allowed to proceed with their plans.

If that was the case, he is as much of an idiot politically as around guns. Gun control is huge loser politically. All the politicians know it.

Obama thought his “magic” could change all that. He is has already lost a good deal, and will lose more, I believe.

***expects the disarmed to rush the criminal rather than shoot back****

And if you count your shots you can drop the magazine with a live round in the chamber to take care of anyone that rushes you while you reload.

I learned that little trick from cops who used to use .45 Colt pistols and others without a magazine disconnect.

As for rifles, same goes since they don’t have magazine disconnects.

***Exactly how would one load only 7 rounds into an M-1 Garand?***

During WWII it was standard procedure among soldiers to eject a partially used clip and reload with a full 8 rounds.
Would not want to use five or six rounds, then later, during a firefight have to use the last two or three, then “ping” and have to reload under fire.
