Obama is the closest thing to Nixon we've seen in 40 years

It is not without a bit of irony that, in the 40 years since the explosion of the Watergate story, Bob Woodward would again be under attack from the White House for trying to tell the truth. But this time the attack is coming from a Democrat.

While Barack Obama may not share the Nixon pedigree, he and his White House are the closest thing to the Nixon regime of any that we have seen since then -- both in the extent of their paranoia and their willingness to suppress the truth and push the boundaries of law.

In my lifetime, in over 40 years in national politics, Mr. Obama is the only president who comes close to rivaling Richard Nixon for fundamental disingenuousness.

At least Nixon served in the military and was a patriot.

Obama hates the military.

Obama far exceeds Nixon. Caddell is showing remnants of his partisan democrat past. Nixon was a rascal and a crony but he was a loyal American and served his country. He fought America's enemies, and advanced her interests, with skill and tenacity.

Even Mao remarked after Nixon's visit to China that he preferred dealing with "rightists" like Nixon rather than fellow leftists, because "rightists say what they mean" while leftists will connive and stab you in the back. Mao would have had the same contempt for the traitor Obama as all the contemporary strongmen have today.

We have to bring up the Lefts bogeyman to justify reasoning that Obama is a borderline tyrant? Like it will wake them up or something?

Nixon was an amateur. What was CREEP? Nothing. His legendary nefariousness is pure myth. Clinton far surpassed Nixon in the level of corruption in the White House. Nixon had a box of money in a safe! It was a joke!

Compared to Obama, Nixon was an alter boy.

At least Nixon didn’t hate America and deliberately try to destroy her.

Real close!

Nixon abetted if not actually caused the formation of OPEC, rather than preventing it which he could have done. He was a creature of the big banks.

What this Woodward, White House sequester battle highlights is the crisis in our democracy. Not so much for what it says about Mr. Obama and his administration but for what it says about the establishment press and all the members of my own party.

That's your money quote. Calling it the main stream or even lame stream media is far too kind. Calling it the BS media doesn't do it justice! Ene'media maybe.

Nixon was no more a conservative than Chris Christie. He was an anti communist whose Sec of State Henry Kissinger felt his goal was to handle the transition to Russian dominance and try to guide the Soviets into a kinder gentler approach. Under Nixon we saw the creation of the EPA, OSHA, wage and price controls, and the continued growth of centralized power. Truth be told, the conservative candidate in 1960 was Kennedy not Nixon.

Nixon might have been paranoid but imagine the same MSM we have today and the way they go after Republicans. Nixon didn't have Rush or Fox etc. to help protect him and faced that hateful despicable group that came after him almost from the start. Nixon was made to pay for their outrage at his ‘72 landslide victory with Watergate. What Nixon did was dwarfed by the actions of his predecessors eg Kennedy's murder of Diem in ‘63 and his successors eg Carter's responsibility for thousands murdered in Iran and Clinton's entire political career.

The people that characterize a political scandal as Nixonian are the same people that throw around the term McCarthyism. Those are the sacred mantra of "an effete corps of impudent snobs who characterize themselves as intellectuals" and have no place on FreeRepublic.

I think the comparison is fairly apt, at least in terms of the obsessive secrecy and willingness to use intimidation tactics against the press and others. Policy and governance is a whole ‘nother matter, of course.

That said, I’d say both men pale in comparison to the vendettas the Clintons waged against their opponents. I’ve never seen any two people in politics use such consistently vicious attacks and be so hell-bent on destroying people they perceived to be a threat to them (or they just didn’t like) as Bill and Hil.
