Five disorders from depression to autism share a genetic link, which could pave the way for new treatments
Autism, ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression and schizophrenia overlap at a genetic level
Two gene markers common to all of the disorders govern the balance of calcium in brain cells
New understanding could help develop treatments
The five most common mental health and developmental disorders share a common genetic root, a study has found. Scientists found a link between autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, depression and schizophrenia.
The findings, from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, could revolutionise how doctors think about the conditions.
'We have been able to discover specific genetic variants that seem to overlap among disorders that we think of as very clinically different,' study leader Dr Jordan Smoller told NBC News.
The team found four genetic variants were associated with all five conditions. These markers were more common in people with the one of the disorders compared to healthy people.
In particular, the research highlighted mutations in two genes that help govern the balance of calcium in brain cells. One of the roles calcium plays is in communication between cells.
The discovery could lead scientists to reclassify the conditions and pave the way to new treatments, say the researchers writing in the The Lancet medical journal. Scientists scanned the genome, or genetic code, of more than 33,000 patients with mental disorders as well as 27,888 healthy individuals. The study was the largest investigation of genetic links to psychiatric illness ever conducted. While the five conditions have always been thought of as separate they do share some symptoms. For instance, mood and thinking problems can occur with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. And children with ADHD often have symptoms of other developmental disorders, such as autism.

Genetic problem? I can make that disappear ...
EXACTLY!! this is all about population control and dare I say it?
Perhaps they should really reveal how we have been slowly poisoned since the fifties, fluoride, vaccines, GMO’s etc. Of course it is genetic NOW.
Ummm....you do know that there was mental illness before 1950, right?
Something definitely wrong with the current landscape.
Umm yes I do. However with the plethora of new diseases that have happened since the late 40’s/50’s. Fibromyalgia, CFS, Lyme disease, the increase in Alzheimer’s and ALS ( both have run in the genetic pool) I believe that as my favorite GP of 50 years claimed years ago... “when they started making plastics and screwing around with food, I knew that there would be BIG problems”.
Happy High Fructose corn syrup to you and oh by the way, they are treating your cold cuts with silicone to allegedly prevent lysteria. God did not intend for your body to ingest these substances, but feel free to go on eating them.
Love Conservatism but believe that at our core, we need to go back to the basics.
Sorry that we disagree.
Who uses sugar in any form or cold cuts? Geez!
genetic links to 5 mental disorders
I would have remembered to take my antidepressants, but I was too busy memorizing the license plates of the cars that rolled past my house. Thanks neverdem.
Sorry if this sounds like a conspiracy theory, but, if they can find a genetic link to mental illness then maybe they can use that excuse to further their anti-gun agenda. “You have the genetic marker for schizophrenia in your blood, so no gun for you!”
So I should take more calcium?
Maybe more magnesium or a calcium channel blocker or avoid the latter like the plague?
Oh look, a chicken!
Maybe Pareidolia is rooted in the same genes.
Hey, just because I see patterns others miss, does not mean I am apophenic.
http://news.unchealthcare.org/news/2013/april/international-study-confirms-multiple-genes-contribute-to-schizophrenia-risk ~ bringing you all up todate, it’s in our genes. That meant it was in there long before plastics or silicon cookware!
you need to know that ~ http://news.unchealthcare.org/news/2013/april/international-study-confirms-multiple-genes-contribute-to-schizophrenia-risk ~ we are THAT CLOSE to such a test. Fur Shur Lanza’s mother would have never let him take that test.
http://news.unchealthcare.org/news/2013/april/international-study-confirms-multiple-genes-contribute-to-schizophrenia-risk ~ this one too ~ the stuff is just rolling out of there. The connections to the genes are being found by matching tens of thousands of genomes of people diagnosed WITH or WITHOUT schizophrenia ~ we couldn’t have done this 10 years back ~ now we can and this horrible condition is one of the first to be studied this way. now for an effective treatment.
