MOSCOW -- The Russian Academy of Sciences is estimating the meteor that streaked into the skies over the Ural Mountains and caused shock waves that injured more than 400 people weighed about 10 tons (11 tons avoirdupois).

The academy said in a statement hours after the Friday morning fall that the meteor entered the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of at least 54,000 kph (33,000 mph) and shattered about 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) above ground.

The fall caused explosions that broke glass over a wide area. The Emergency Ministry says more than 500 people sought treatment after the blasts and that 34 of them were hospitalized.

The asteroid itself will miss us by quite a bit, but no celestial rock is alone in its transit of the solar system. Something the size of DA2012 is going to have satellite rocks surrounding it.

Good point. Also possible that the asteroid is not a solid body but "rubble pile". The earth's gravity might shatter the pile and send part of the rubble toward earth. This is especially true if the rubble pile has any spin.

“Just read this morning that there is TALK of a plan by NASA to look into nudging asteroids”

Whoever can do this will rule the world. They will have the capability to nudge rocks TOWARD Earth as well.

It all keeps the peasants diverted and quiet.

Sport has been used for social control for thousands of years.

There’s nothing new about what’s happening today.

That’s what I thought of when I first saw this story last night. And this:

Luke 21:25-36

“And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.”

Yup. We blithely go about our daily existence thinking we (human race) are all powerful, not realizing the Earth exists in a shooting gallery, and we could be erased from the planet almost instantly.

Let us not forget that there could be more companion rocks BEHIND the big rock that will flyby at 17,000 miles, 2PM EST.

I bet some in Russia are blaming the US government. If you’ve been drinking vodka daily all your life, well...

NASA guru says:

http://www.foxnews.com/science/2013/02/15/russian-meteor-explosion-not-caused-by-asteroid-flyby-nasa-scientist-says/

Not associated with 2012 DA14 and it was not a sonic boom that caused the damage but the few meters wide Bolide exploding was.

Exactly! I saw the headline about the meteor on YahooNews, went to the TV expecting to see more about it —— all the talk was about the effing cruise ship and the blade runner. Surprised they weren’t showing reruns of DWTS. Idiots.

Morning TV is ovewhelmingly oriented towards women and stories they find of interest

I'm sure plenty of women (including housewives) are interested in and fascinated by this story, I don't mean to paint with a broad brush, but your average idiot low-information voter soap-opera-watching housewife is MUCH more interested in the cruise ship and the Pastorius story than this meteorite.
