Ex-mayor gambled away $1 billion (San Diego)

SAN DIEGO — Former San Diego Mayor Maureen O’Connor took $2 million from a nonprofit foundation to feed a gambling addiction in which she lost more than $1 billion over an eight-year period, federal prosecutors said Thursday.

O’Connor, 66, appeared in federal court and pleaded not guilty to a money laundering charge as part of a deferred prosecution. Under the arrangement with federal prosecutors, she has two years to repay the $2 million taken from the R.P. Foundation, a nonprofit set up by her late husband, Robert O. Peterson.

Peterson was the co-founder of the Jack-In-The-Box restaurant chain and later Southern California First National Bank Corp., which eventually became part of the Union Bank empire.

Prosecutors said O’Connor, who is in poor physical health, had $1 billion in gambling winnings between 2000 and 2008, but she posted losses during the same period that were greater than that amount. They described her as “destitute.”

Robert Peterson did not have cancer (leukemia) when he married her, but he was 30 years older and she was his third wife, and one huge mistake. I’d call it his biggest mistake. We could never understand that marriage and never approved. You’re facts are correct regarding Roger Hedgecock and I was for Roger Hedgecock.

One day, I visited Bob in the old Marston House on 7th Avenue and had a stack of Hedgecock for Mayor signs in my VW Convertable to take home to Pacific Beach to place around my neighborhood. Maureen was there and she was pleased at all when she spotted those signs...lol.

The O’Conner’s were always trash. Her oldest brother, Denny was shot and killed at the old Campus Drive-In theater way back in the late 50’s or 60’s. The family lived on Dove Street in lower Mission Hills.

Surely that number can’t be right even for such a timeframe . . . won and lost a billion?!

I don't think she was playing the quarter slots at that rate.

Serves me right for not reading the article before commenting, I suppose.

It takes even more skill to be dumb enough not to see that much passing through the books.

There’s no way to balance the state budget when you can’t account for that much money.

Roger Hedgecock is still around. He has a daily radio talk show on KFMB AM San Diego. His show starts at 3:00 pm west coast time, about 20 minutes from now. Should be an interesting show today.

No! I like Jack & The Box shakes better than all the competitors available to me here in the Soviet of Washington.

However, I have a rule...no supportie dim dummies with my life’s energy! She isn’t still involved with J&TB?

It’s getting hard making high information choices, too damn many companies giving it up for the enemy.

A few months back there was a story about a small town treasurer who siphoned off tens of millions, a large part of the town budget over many years. She got away with it because no one else was paying attention I guess.

I thought her brother was stabbed at the Campus Drive in on El Cajon Blvd. The story I heard is that the O’Connor brother attacked a guy with a knife. I heard that the victim of the attack acted in self defense and O’Connor was stabbed with his own knife and there was no prosecution. I had the misfortune of meeting some of the other dirt bag brothers at the Lamplighter Bar in Mission Hills years ago. I never went back there again.

You bring up some good stories that Helen Copley never published.

A billion dollars gambled away? Outstanding.

Maureen O'Connor, on behalf of every Nevadan, I'd like to say that we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Please consider yourself comped like nobody's business at any of our fine casinos in the Las Vegas, Tahoe, and Reno areas. God bless you, and thanks again.

I think you’re right: stabbed. I was very young. Denny was the one in the wrong. The entire O’Connor family are trash. They lived next door to friends of my parents on Dove Street. Robert Peterson was my Dad’s nephew but only separated by ten years in age. They grew up together in Coronado. Our whole family was very close. Bob’s kids are my age and we’re close.

Thankfully, Copley’s lecherous fag son is dead, now, too.

Maureen was such a fraud at his funeral. Surrounded by nuns. Our family standing on one side together. Hers on the other. It was a circus. Held at Ft. Rosecrans. I don’t think she even spoke to Bob’s only brother and I should know, because he was with me the whole time. What a witch.

Now how did she do that after stealing only 2 million?

How much did she inherit from her late husband, the founder of Jack-in-the-Box and Southern California First National Bank?

Perhaps it's the case that she only raided the foundation after gambling away a 10-digit inheritance.

Way toward the bottom of the article, it mentions her party affiliation. Needless to say, it’s Democrat. Being a Democrat, she’s of course say she doesn’t have a gambling problem. She has a losing problem.

Remember the campaign treasurer, female Democrat, who got in trouble for embezzling last year? Now this. The Feds needs to look at money laundering going on in the CA Democrat party.
