SAN DIEGO — Former San Diego Mayor Maureen O’Connor took $2 million from a nonprofit foundation to feed a gambling addiction in which she lost more than $1 billion over an eight-year period, federal prosecutors said Thursday.
O’Connor, 66, appeared in federal court and pleaded not guilty to a money laundering charge as part of a deferred prosecution. Under the arrangement with federal prosecutors, she has two years to repay the $2 million taken from the R.P. Foundation, a nonprofit set up by her late husband, Robert O. Peterson.
Peterson was the co-founder of the Jack-In-The-Box restaurant chain and later Southern California First National Bank Corp., which eventually became part of the Union Bank empire.
Prosecutors said O’Connor, who is in poor physical health, had $1 billion in gambling winnings between 2000 and 2008, but she posted losses during the same period that were greater than that amount. They described her as “destitute.”

Down in paragraph 9 (NINE): "O’Connor, a DEMOCRAT who served two terms as mayor from 1986 to 1992, is accused of transferring $2 million from the foundation beginning in September 2008 and March 2009. She never repaid the money."
Of course, if she had been a Republican, it would be mentioned in the headline!
I am a long time resident of San Diego and I have always hated that phony. I remember when she was mayor she did everything she could to block the Indian tribes from building a casino in San Diego. She was holier than thou speaking against the evils of gambling. Her dirt bag brothers were involved with card rooms in San Diego.
She is a lesbian and did not have two coins to rub together until she married a rich old geezer with cancer.
Roger Hedgecock defeated her in the mayoral race back about 1984. The the San Diego Union Tribune was owned by Helen Copley (another lesbian who got rich by marrying her boss, the newspaper owner). The newspaper got the political hack district attorney to indict Hedgecock on phony campaign law viotations. He was convicted on one count and forced to resign. She steps in and becomes mayor. Hedgecock’s conviction was later overturned.
As mayor 0’Connor flew around the world visiting airports on “fact finding” tours and accomplished nothing. We still don’t have a decent airport, but she put on a Soviet Art Festival and a Faberge Egg show. She was a huge fan of Ted Kennedy. She makes Barbara Boxer look like a paragon of virtue.
I cannot wait to hear Rodger Hedgecock’s comments.

When I finally mentioned this phenomenon to my wife, she spluttered with rage "men still commit most of the crimes and most of the violent crimes!" I admitted as much, but the facts are women are far ahead of men in this particular area for the last thirty years. Now whenever one of these stories crops up in the news and the perp is a man she shouts "see, men steal money too!" with enormous satisfaction. But I chuckle to myself about one crime where women outpace men. I'd be interested to know how many of these female embezzlers, like O'Connor, are Democrats as well.

Are we to believe she stole $2 million, turned it into $1 BILLION, and then lost that entire amount? If not, where did that huge amount come from?

I remember when that happened to Roger Hedgecock. I lived in San Diego county at the time. I had forgotten why I disliked her.
