Does it seem to you a little odd that just a couple of weeks after he is visited by leon panetta, he resigns?

The world is filled with oddities ... the news reports I saw didn't suggest that it was anything more than a brief public encounter at a public audience. Also that Panetta has met Benedict more than once, and that Panetta is alleged to be a "staunch" (whatever that means, these days) Catholic.

If you're suggesting that panetta carried some kind of threat ... maybe, but it must have been quite veiled.

and your equation of baggage to ‘issues with non-Catholic brethren’ would seem to cut both ways, would it not?

YES.

I'm irritated when non-Catholics bring up some schtick from the 1700s to beat me over the head today -- I can toss muck from the 1800s too if they want, but it gets us nowhere.

the tossing of baggage needs to be on both sides

The problem was that no one was willing to make the first move

The greatness of Pope JP II and Pope Benedict was that they were brave enough to do it and the rewards especially in terms of closer relationship with the Orthodox has been wonderful

“...the Vatican is a political organization with the same kinds of corrupt (sic) as those in DC”

While it is indeed true that there are sinful people in the Vatican (as in EVERY other grouping of humans), the Church per se is neither political nor corrupt.

.my major concern is to avoid further deemphasis of the Deposit of Faith in the name of ‘improved earthly relations’ with those who willingly snubbed the Church.

a valid concern and Pope Benedict has done nothing of the sort.

I don’t hate Catholics. I have family members who are Catholic.

I hate child molesters and those that cover up for them.

You have Irish in your nick.

Aren’t you appalled by what happened in Ireland???

TENS OF THOUSANDS OF VICTIMS

Sexual , physical, and mental abuse at the hands of those the Catholic Church.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/feb/11/pope-benedict-xvi-resigns-age

“John Kelly, co-founder of Irish Survivors of Child Abuse, said: “In our view we were let down in terms of promises of inquiries, reform and most importantly of all the Vatican continuing not to acknowledge that any priest or religious found guilty of child abuse would face the civil authorities and be tried for their crimes in the courts.””

I just don’t trust anything this government does...and obama HAS declared war on the Catholic Church. OPEN war.

No, I don't much care for His Execrable Majesty, Emperor Barack "Obamalini" the Destroyer ... also known as "Il Douche".

I try to hide my disdain, but occasionally hints of it escape.

I don’t discount the possibility ... and certainly if the Church is to engage in “OPEN war” with 0bama and his minions, a younger and more vigorous leader would be helpful.

The Church is an organization. It is filled with corruption.

Vatileaks shows that...if you didn’t already understand it by the child molesting cover up.

Your current Pope can’t handle the Tsunami coming his way from Vatileaks and Child Molesting.

He openly defended pedophiles.

Instead of making excuses for your Church you should be willing to shine a big bright light on it.

Two of the most powerful Catholics in the US - Mahoney and Law have been brought down by their cover ups.

The mass murderer Adam Lanza may have been exposed to a Child Molester at St Rose of Lima. One hired by Egan. Egan admitted he didn’t think there was anything wrong with shuffling child molesters around.

And his confidant was just busted as a Drug Dealing Transvestite Gay Priest

Expose the corruption and get the Child Molesters out of there instead of covering up for them.

The way they talk about non-Catholics and even about each other pretty much makes me apathetic to any of their troubles.

When I was much younger, we had to have patrols in the Parish parking lot during Mass because some people were out there slashing tires and vandalizing cars. Those people thought performing these acts were a way to get people out of the Church ... and into theirs.

You're welcome to be apathetic about such things if that is your desire. You are also welcome to turn a blind eye to such things.

But today, let us Catholics to peace, please.

...sir or madam, many things appall me, including the many flaws I observe in myself...and in that regard, to go about beating my chest about how appalled I am about others actions would smack of hubris and immense self satisfaction, both of which are inimical to moral formation...
...so let me rephrase...you don’t hate Catholics, you hate people who do bad things, and you likewise hate those whom you infer do not hate them as much as you do...
...fair enough, I guess...

Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson of Ghana, is the said to be one of the favourite for the job of pope while Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze is seen as an outside contender for the job.

Wonder if Cardinal Peter gets the job if he will keep the name Peter?

Also, I see you joined FR about 5 months ago, so that means the offensive comments must have been recent. This distresses me. Maybe I don't go to the threads that you do, but I haven't generally seen bad behavior by Catholics, nor by non-Catholic Christians either, except for about the same 3 or 4 who are dependably biters and whom I shall not name.

If I may ask, please pray for me.

The above is simply evidence of supreme ignorance and gullibility. Your perspective is definitely secular political at its base and full of half truths and misinformation.

PS Vatileaks is not a good source if you are genuinely interested in the full truth.

““In the 1970s, paedophilia was theorised as something fully in conformity with man and even with children,” the Pope said.”
