Panetta: Obama never called back to check on Benghazi
Hot Air.com ^ | February 8, 2013 | ED MORRISSEY

We didn’t get to this yesterday, but it’s definitely worth watching — especially for the skill shown by Lindsey Graham in his examination of Leon Panetta and General Martin Dempsey. The headline takeaway will be what is remembered most: the revelation that Barack Obama never bothered to keep in touch with his chair of the Joint Chiefs and Secretary of Defense after being informed that an American consulate was under attack from terrorists.

But if that’s all you hear from this, you’re missing the big picture. Graham managed to elicit a number of damaging statements from the two. Not one aircraft had been deployed during the attack; not one boot left the ground outside of Libya. As far as the 281 concurrent threat reports that Panetta and Dempsey claimed kept them from considering Benghazi a special threat, Graham asks how many of those cables came from US Ambassadors stating specifically (as Stevens’ did) that an American installation was incapable of defending itself against a sustained attack and that government buildings nearby were flying al-Qaeda flags — “because I want to know about them, if they do,” Graham adds. Dempsey tries to push that off to State, at which time Graham informs Dempsey that Hillary Clinton claimed never to have seen that cable, even though Dempsey clearly had, which he admits is “surprising.”

Graham then circles back to the lack of action from the White House once the attack was under way:

Lindsey Graham Hammers Leon Panetta & Gen Dempsey on Benghazi and not getting troops there

SEN. GRAHAM: Are you surprised that the president of the United States never called you, Secretary Panetta, and say, ‘how’s it going?’

SEC. PANETTA: I — you know, normally in these situations –

SEN. GRAHAM: Did he know the level of threat that –

SEC. PANETTA: Let — well, let me finish the answer. We were deploying the forces. He knew we were deploying the forces. He was being kept updated –

SEN. GRAHAM: Well, I hate to interrupt you, but I got limited time. We didn’t deploy any forces. Did you call him back — wait a minute –

SEC. PANETTA: No, but the event — the event was over by the time we got –

SEN. GRAHAM: Mr. Secretary, you didn’t know how long the attack would last. Did you ever call him and say, Mr. President, it looks like we don’t have anything to get there anytime soon?

SEC. PANETTA: The event was over before we could move any assets.

SEN. GRAHAM: It lasted almost eight hours. And my question to you is during that eight-hour period, did the president show any curiosity about how’s this going, what kind of assets do you have helping these people? Did he ever make that phone call?

SEC. PANETTA: Look, there is no question in my mind that the president of the United States was concerned about American lives and, frankly, all of us were concerned about American lives.

SEN. GRAHAM: With all due respect, I don’t believe that’s a credible statement if he never called and asked you, are we helping these people; what’s happening to them? We have a second round, and we’ll take it up then.

Graham just demolished the entire White House defense on Benghazi in less than ten minutes of cross-examination.

They need to put BO under oath and make damn sure that they have evidence to show when he starts lying under oath. They should have done that with Hillary. Presented actual evidence that shows she was lying.

Panetta said in his testimony that he informed 0bama of the attack in Benghazi. That was a strange thing to say given that he and 0bama had a scheduled meeting in the WH at the very time the attack began. Both would have been independently notified by their own staff, by law, that the attack was happening. Has 0bama ordered his staff not to bother him with trivial events such as attacks on embassies and consulates?

It doesn’t matter what the MSM wants to report. They can’t hide the FACT that BO was AWOL during this raid. There’s not one thing they can say or do that would make that go away. Where he actually was remains the big mystery. It must be really bad wherever he was.

The POS is the ONLY one who can deploy forces internationally...this BS line of "leaving it up to Panetta and Hilda" is pure BS

And as Travis has been screaming at the top of his lungs...only the President has the power to issue Cross Border Authority.

Our closest assets were at U.S. Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily. CBA was required to send help to Benghazi.

The President, by his absence--by his refusal to get involved--TOLD OUR FORCES TO STAND DOWN re: the rescue of our Ambassador and SEAL's in Benghazi.

The only thing the Obamahole was concerned with was his campaign event the next day.

Why, oh why, do Freepers still whine about the MSM not reporting the truth?

Because complaining is better than quietly rolling into a ball.

I believe he doesn’t do the CYA all that well, because we know he’s covering his ass. He does it prolifically, but not well me thinks. If he did it well we’d be as ignorant of his antics as the low info voters that support him. We aren’t.

Let's give Linda her due. She did a great job of hammering Panetta.

As much as Lindsay Graham screws up, and wins dunce of the day award day after day I have to hand it to him on this one. He managed to beat up on Panetta, and Dempsey for the Congressional Record quite well.

He should be commended for a job well done, but he’s like the arrogant little Shitzu we have if we give him a pat on the head he thinks he can do no wrong, and screws up time, and again. Best to leave the kudos unsaid I guess.

Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer: My sources tell me Obama was in the room watching Benghazi attack video 10-27-2012

Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer said tonight that his sources tell him that Obama was one of the people in the room watching the Benghazi attack go down and both he and Col. David Hunt agree it would have taken an order by the president to intervene. Further, Col. Hunt said that we were only 20 min away by jet and a couple of hours away by AC-130 gunships and special forces, and the decision not to intervene had to be political.

So Panetta said we were deploying troops...but no troops were deployed. This must have been because they didn’t get authorization from Obama?

So everyone was ready to go but Obama refused to authorize it????

Why are these people covering for him? This is as much treason as Obama.

See tag line...and don't roll into a ball;-)

This war will break out into the open soon enough. Get ready!

CWII is well underway. But the Communist-owned press is hiding the details.

I was pretty impressed by good ol’ Lindsay, too.

But this is something that I noticed in the letter sent by 11 Senators to Bambi complaining about his self-appointed judge, jury and executioner drone policy: it was 8 far left Dems and 3 ultra-liberal GOPers.

So you never know where sanity is going to break out. Praise them for this act, which was actually pretty courageous, because Obambi doesn’t like ANYBODY to oppose him, as numerous generals and even WH staffers have found out. And then see what they do next.

Strange times.

“Nuclear catastrophe was hanging by a thread ... and we weren’t counting days or hours, but minutes.” -Soviet General and Army Chief of Operations, Anatoly Gribkov

I guess it was a good thing that President John F. Kennedy stayed in the game. I see nothing in the record that indicates that he just slept and then simply flew off to Las Vegas.

Perhaps my memory is failing on this, but I don’t remember an American Ambassador and 3 other Americans getting brutally murdered during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Seems the “Magic Negro” doesn’t have any good magic, just Black Magic.

This is truly bizarre. Was he or wasn’t he there? The initial stories were very conflicting and things don’t seem to have improved much in the interim.

The attack went on for 8 hours, although there was a lull. Perhaps Obama was informed initially (when he called Panetta) and then went off to bed and left strict instructions not to be awakened because he had an early flight to Vegas?

There are two possibilities. Either he was there and didn’t do anything to help or couldn’t make a decision, or he wasn’t there and had been informed but didn’t care enough to follow up on it and then went to bed after his one conversation with Panetta, who seems to have been the only one he spoke to that day.

Neither of these scenarios is a good one. If it were anybody but Obama, he’d already be out of office and probably even looking at criminal charges.
