There are a lot of blue areas that I’m not aware of being particularly violent (Vermont and the Lake Tahoe area) and red areas that are hell-holes (St. Louis and Milwaukee).

I noticed that yesterday when I first saw that chart posted on another thread.

For instance, tiny, rural Alpine County on the California/Nevada border (just south of Lake Tahoe) is shown in blue as having a high gun violence problem. There are only 1,175 people in the entire county which is very rural. I can recall only one instance of a crime committed there when someone traveling through the area committed some crime four or five years ago.

Just a few years ago the Los Angeles Times did a story on Alpine County calling it the safest, most crime free county in all of California.

An odd defensive comment.

I like being outside, for one. And there are jobs all over the place. In fact, Texas power plant jobs pay really poorly compared to elsewhere.

One thing I really didnt like was the arrogant attitude of some Texans. I wasn't going to be rude and mention it, but you've pointed it out for all quite well.

I was referring to my sister and her husband - they are two of the most arrogant people I’ve ever met. And their egos are inflated because they make a ton of money. And they look down their noses at anyone not in their ‘social bracket’ - a term they use often - or anyone not living in Texas. But they are not the only ones I’ve met like that.

There ARE 56 other states, all with pros and cons.

I just wish the independent-minded states were in the middle of the country. But I’ve surmised that the rugged individualists in places like Texas, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana are in those places because of the difficult weather, not in spite of it.

But with economic collapse in our future (or at least inflation making heating/cooling expensive), I prefer to be on the cold side. And love splitting and stacking wood as well. My destination needs to be above the 37 degree lattitude line.

True. Is Texas still doing well with the oil industry? I know her tax structure for companies is great, so many are attracted there.

All we need is one opening, not an entire slew of them ;) Of course, the best option is a growing economy based on conservative principles to ensure prosperity for the future.

The oil business is doing well for the on-shore component. The Eagle Ford shale play is still ongoing, for example, at a ridiculous rate.

It should also be pointed out that Texas does not depend on the oil business - and since the last oil bust, Texas has been frantically diversifying its economy to ride out any future catastrophes of that type. Today’s Texas economy is well balanced between tech, manufacturing, energy, medical and agricultural sectors (among others). It isn’t dependent on oil and farming any more.

I am convinced that you are correct. And what a shame it is. As I have often commented on FR, I consider myself one of the luckiest people on Earth. I was fortunate enough to grow up (I came of age in the 1950s) in a great country that offered a person fantastic freedoms and great opportunities. Now, it has come to this. What a crying shame.

No need to be snotty about it. Just because I don't want to live where you live is NOT a personal statement about you. You can take it that way if you wish, but there is no need to do so.

Reloading supplies are getting scarce. Bullets can be molded from wheel weights in small quantities. Primers are difficult to produce. Consistent smokeless powder is a problem too. Black powder can be manufactured, but isn't nearly as safe to handle as modern smokeless propellants. There is also a matter of being licensed and insured as an ammo manufacturer. The rules differ when it is offered for sale vs loaded for personal use.

Very smart. She's also clever - I think - about electrical production. All done in-house with nary a grid going in or out of the state. And costs are kept low as well. (Not great for the workers, but awesome for the consumers - which IS capitalism, after all.)

Our best days are long gone. And we're not passing onto the next generation anything close to what we got. I always wished I was born earlier and got to live when you did-I'm an older soul longing for the good old days that I never did get to see.

These are not the only states with jobs available. But thanks for the idea. You forgot to mention wefare, food stamps, and Obamacare as Plan C.
