British House of Commons Approves Gay Marriage
New York Times ^ | Feburary 5, 2013 | John F. Burns & Adam Cowell

The House of Commons voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to approve a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in Britain, indicating that the bill is assured of passage as it moves through further legislative stages....

After a six-hour debate, the Commons vote was 400 to 175 for the bill. It will have to pass in the House of Lords, where delaying tactics by opponents are possible, but Mr. Cameron has said that he plans to have the bill enacted into law sometime this summer.....

A day after the newly confirmed archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, took office saying that he shared the Church of England’s opposition to same-sex marriage, three cabinet officials said in a letter published in The Daily Telegraph that the new legislation was “the right thing to do at the right time.”

“Marriage has evolved over time,” the letter said. “We believe that opening it up to same-sex couples will strengthen, not weaken, the institution.”

The three ministers — George Osborne, the chancellor of the Exchequer, Foreign Secretary William Hague and Home Secretary Theresa May — also asked whether it was “any longer acceptable to exclude people from marriage simply because they love someone of the same sex.”

Ed Miliband, the leader of the opposition Labour Party, had said on Monday that he would urge his 255 legislators in the 649-member body to vote with him.

“I’ll be voting for equal marriage for a very simple reason: I don’t think that the person you love should determine the rights you have,” he said.

The libertarian party has not been taken over by leftists, it is the same as it has always been, libertarian.

I’m not interested in useless, inadequate definitions, I am interested in political agendas and activities, goals, and in this case I have pointed out why libertarians reject conservatism, it is because of their radical leftist social causes, not economics and small government, which have always defined conservatism.

A man who embraces the political label that represents and advances partial birth abortion, pedophilia, homosexual marriage, homo adoption, Opium dens and street hookers, polygamy, and removing border controls and throwing open America to the unlimited masses of the world, has issues, and has no right to pretend to be conservative.

It is sick, and anti-American.

But your reading of libertarianism is so selective and distorted that you can’t be taken seriously. You are a crank with an axe to grind.

You really don’t understand conservatives if you think my reading of the libertarian agenda is “selective”.

They share conservative economics but they turn hard, radical leftist on social issues and military issues, do I agree with a political movement that disagrees with two legs of the three legged conservative stool? No, of course not.

Do you think that I will embrace abortion, open borders, gay marriage and pedophilia and so on to win some votes on taxes? No.

libertarianism: an extreme laissez-faire political philosophy advocating only minimal state intervention in the lives of citizens.

In my opinion, that definition is ass backwards as it applies to America. Unlike other countries -America is quite different. In America the government IS comprised of the citizens; society -government does not rule society; society rules government. Minimal state intervention is achieved through limiting government.

In America, Libertarians have a problem with society -specifically with social order. As such, it is easy to see WHY libertarians are actually leftists BECAUSE they support efforts to impose via government tyranny minimal societal intervention in the role of governance.

A person that refuses to embrace inconvenient definitions should not be taken seriously.

Slander away, jackass.

What do you expect them to do -- honestly defend their love of Big Brother?

Like libertarians do? Libertarians favor a limited big brother; however, a big brother none the less. They are useful idiot leftists.

Neither extreme of libertarianism nor statism is tolerable, but a healthy societal balance can be found somewhere between the two. The Country was founded on principles that shunned the constraints of statism.

I’m not in disagreement with the argument that the Libertarian Party is a breeding ground for Leftism.

A person who grabs a definition to explain a vast, radical political movement sounds like the people at DU who love to post definitions of conservatism and liberalism and libertarianism.

Libertarianism lives, is real and is largely leftist except for the conservative economics and small government that they claim to embrace, while promoting a social destruction that would end all chances for conservative advances in that area.

Moving us left and finishing off our families and society and culture will result in the opposite of conservative goals for government and social programs.

“”You Can Thank a Few Rich Libertarians for Gay Marriage””

“How do you get rich Republicans to support gay marriage? By appealing to their libertarian sensibilities. The New York Times is out with its lyrical, 2,000-plus-word tick-tock of how the gay-marriage fight was won, and it centers on a meeting between Governor Cuomo’s aides and Republican donors. Amid tuna and turkey sandwiches a few weeks ago, the governor’s aides tested whether billionaire Paul Singer and hedge-fund managers Cliff Asness and Dan Loeb would be willing to support the cause. Surprisingly they were, since they were “inclined to see the issue as one of personal freedom, consistent with their more libertarian views.”
With their help (read: $1 million plus) gay-rights groups could tell the four Republican senators who took a leap of faith and voted yes to the bill that there’d be money to catch their fall.”

The saying that "a lie is a lie even if everybody believes it, and the truth is the truth even if noone believes it" probably doesn't go over well with these folks.

Looks like the world of truth is fast being taken down by the "believers". They fell for the old safety-in-numbers deception.

When dictators have those 99% approval ratings, do they necessarily lie or do they simply eliminate those who are dragging down the stats?

Either way, it still leaves those annoying 1%-ers to deal with...

I agree with you 100%. I never use gay to describe homosexuals. Just look at all the posts where people use it. They have brainwashed the public. They even have people using heterosexual like its a bad word.

Normal and abnormal sex, simple. No need to define a marriage as “normal”. If you have to use a qaulifier, “homosexual marriage”, then it is abnormal.

I spread the word every day to all I can tell.

you and I speak out but sadly so many use the word gay, they shut up when the issue is mentioned to friends and family and thta plays right into the lefts radical hands.

They;re homosexuals and they use gay to put a happy face on their sexual lifestyle and yet they ;re not even happy deep down.

Good for you pal for standing nad speaking up, if only millions were like you

As I keep pointing out here, they are a small minority, so who cares?. They arent even the biggest ethnic non-white minority in the UK.
