Skip to comments.State Police: All 26 Newtown victims shot with assault rifle

Lt. J. Paul Vance, the face of an ongoing Connecticut State Police investigation into worst grade-school shooting in U.S. history, Thursday debunked media and Internet reports that Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza killed his victims with handguns and not the Bushmaster XM-15 E2S rifle that is now the focus of a proposed federal assault-weapons ban.
All 26 of Lanza's victims were shot with the .223-caliber semi-automatic rifle, said Vance, who bristled at claims to the contrary during an interview with Hearst Connecticut Newspapers.
"It's all these conspiracy theorists that are trying to mucky up the waters," said Vance, the longtime state police spokesman. Multiple Second Amendment and gun owner websites have attempted to cast doubts on whether the Bushmaster XM-15, a type of AR-15 rifle that is currently legal, was used in the Dec. 14 carnage done by Lanza.
Some have cited a Dec. 15 "Today" show video clip from the day after the shooting, in which NBC News Justice Department correspondent Pete Williams said that four handguns were recovered inside Sandy Hook Elementary School and that the Bushmaster rifle was found in the trunk of a car owned by Lanza's slain mother, Nancy Lanza.
"There's no doubt that the rifle was used solely to kill 26 people in that school," Vance said.
Twenty children ages 7 and under and six female educators were killed when Lanza forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School and sprayed the occupants with bullets before turning a gun on himself.
Vance said he made it abundantly clear during his media briefings since the tragedy that Lanza carried out the shooting with the Bushmaster.
"I personally articulated that probably a dozen times in Newtown," Vance said.

And if only 2 were shot with the rifle, to quote Hillary, “what difference does that make?”
It’s amazing this pops up now, pre-gun ban, when there were so many reports to the contrary after the event.
So has anyone asked Pete Williams at NBC wtf is going on?
I am just curious, but if all 26 victims had been shot by a handgun, would they now be trying to ban handguns? I don’t think so. They waited for a crisis of opportunity to move on rifles. After they ban those, they will wait for a handgun crisis. And then a shotgun crisis. Etc.
Compared to what? Lanza with two handguns and plenty of ten-round magazines? At the range Lanza was shooting at, accuracy was irrelvant. And all he would have to do is shoot the teacher in each room first and then face no resistance in a classroom from the small children, so changing magazines would not present an opportunity to jump him.
Nothing like tactical idiots with an agenda.
and the story changes again...
1st they said the long gun was in the car. Now to vilify so called assault rifles they are saying it wasn’t the 2 hangins but the AR. Which is it?
Sounds like the lying sacks of s**t are at it again.
Really? All 26 were shot with a weapon capable of full auto 3 shot bursts?
I don’t think there were “so many” reports to the contrary, there were just a bunch of reports citing this one NBC report. One mistake gets spread and amplified quickly.
I think what happened is the police never said that the Bushmaster was in the trunk, they said they recovered a “long gun” from the trunk, NBC was aware that a Bushmaster was recovered, but hand’t heard about the shotgun, and they autmatically assumed the Bushmaster was the “Long Gun.”
I was wondering the same thing myself: it’s been about eight hours since someone reposted that false story. /s
“There’s no question that the AR-15 was used, the Bushmaster shot those children with multiple rounds and was instrumental in the massacre...”
Which gun was used has become a matter of extreme importance, so I’m disinclined to blindly accept this fat @#$%’s word for it.
I recall reports that Lanza did not fire full magazines, but changed then well before they were empty, meaning high cap magazines were not a factor at all.
All guns except machine guns and muzzle loaders are SEMI-AUTOMATIC. They require multiple trigger pulls to fully discharge the weapon.
I’ve seen multiple internet videos of that old guy sharpshooter who can shoot a revolver (single action or not) just as fast as somebody can crank out with a semi-auto, rifle or not.
It isn’t about ‘assault’ anything. It is about control. It is about banning what they can initially along with magazines they don’t like, but the end result is banning guns, period...it will start with universal checks, national registry, and then confiscation.
Come and take them, then.
I'm not doing any conspiracy stuff. I accept everything the officials say. But I do want to comment on the way some people formulate their sentences -- it can reveal something of the thoughts inside their head.
Look at the phrase above. I know what the man meant. He was providing useful information. He was attempting to indicate that a handgun was not used, and neither was a shotgun used. A rifle was used: nothing else. I got that.
But what he actually says -- the wording he came up with -- says that rifles have no use other than to kill people -- "the rifle was used solely to kill".
Not a statement I like to see. That's the mentality of a gun-grabber.
It doesn’t matter. The Second Amendment guarantees our right to bear arms.
Any attempt to ban guns is unconstitutional. Next please.
What ever is necessary to meet the desired political outcome.
“Lanza changed magazines frequently as he fired his way through the first-grade classrooms of Lauren Rousseau and Victoria Soto, sometimes shooting as few as 15 shots from a 30-round magazine, sources said.
More than a week after the shooting, investigators were still finding bullets under doors and in carpets and walls in the school as they tried to match the casings to the magazines.”
