Criminals to Journal News: Thanks For the Gun Map
Town Hall.com ^ | 1/3/13 | Katie Pavlich

Former criminals have one thing to say about the Journal News posting a detailed map of gun owners in New York State: criminals are thanking you for the help.

Reformed crooks say the New York newspaper that published a map of names and addresses of gun owners did a great service – to their old cronies in the burglary trade.

The information published online by the Journal-News, a daily paper serving the New York suburbs of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, could be highly useful to thieves in two ways, former burglars told FoxNews.com. Crooks looking to avoid getting shot now know which targets are soft and those who need weapons know where they can steal them.

"What they did was insanity," added Shaw, author of "License to Steal," a book about his criminal career.

Meanwhile in another county with gun owners being targeted by the Journal News, public officials are fighting back, saying the newspaper's efforts only invite more crime.

The defiant New York county clerk who has refused to hand over names and addresses of handgun permit holders to a newspaper that has stirred controversy by publishing the public information is standing firm, saying it's a matter of safety.

"This certainly puts my public in danger," Putnam County Clerk Dennis Sant said in reiterating his stance against the Journal News, a daily paper that serves the New York City suburbs of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties.

Assemblyman Steve Katz backed Sant, saying the newspaper had exposed the names of those who own guns for no good reason, and said the decision could put people at risk.

“The Journal News has really come up with the perfect map for the perpetrators and for the stalkers and for the criminals,” Katz said. “They have yet to give us a cogent reason why, except for the reason that they can. I am sorry — that is not acceptable.”

I think the Journal News ought to “lawyer up” for lawsuits against them by people who are burglarized (or worse) for aiding and abetting criminals in determining where to go and where not to go.

We can learn a thing or two from the left. They are masters of political Jiu-Jitsu - they can take an attack and turn it to their advantage.

Some 2nd amendment group, or a coalition of them should call a press conference to publicly thank the paper for doing this. And demonstrating why we are so afraid of gun registration and why we are so unalterably opposed to it.

And then read off the names and phone numbers of the people at the paper to call and write with our thanks.

since abortions are legal and to celebrated(sarc) by the media, shouldnt those who exercised that right be published too? Especially if we are paying for them now?
I heard Glenn Beck bring this point up this morning.

Just two sentences of this article belong to you Katie. Pretty lazy if you ask me. Does Townhall pay you for this?

Already done. Everything, and lots more, you need to do that is right here:

Mr. Fountain's blog is a large part of why the Journal-News had to hire security guards at the newspaper. I'm sure the bigwigs got personal guards as well.

I know where Janet Hasson lives, right near the Winged Foot Golf and Country Club, one of the “old money” parts of Westchester Co.

I know. That was a good start. Not nearly enough though. Notice how the left took that and used it to make gun owners look bad.

Look - bad people can also hurt the children of police officers, prison guards, judges and lawyers who carry guns for protection...

Knowing when ‘mom and dad’ work ( armed with addresses - thanks to the effing "Journal") can give criminals access to the kids. Lowlife's understand ‘getting even’... it's a trait they seem to share with members of the MSM..

OWNERSHIP PERMITS, the vast majority of which are not allowed outside the house.

We don't know for sure if these are concealed carry, target (you're only allowed to take the handgun to a range, otherwise it MUST be kept at home), or ownership permit, which basically states that you take the gun home and it never leaves your home or business.

What the heck are you talking about?

You forgot to mention the 100+ lb gun safe.

Impeach the kenyan or secession.

When I lived in NY back in 1986 or so, and was looking into bringing a couple of handguns into the state (Westchester Co, actually), I was told that there were 3 sorts of permits issued for handguns. There was concealed carry, but those were very rarely issued unless you had specific needs or great connections. The second was a "target permit," which allowed the handgun to be transported, unloaded and in a locked case, to a shooting range, or a residence permit, where once the handgun is at the home or business, it had to stay there.

I'm not positive about the names, but while I had a buddy with an FFL in MO who could ship the handguns to an FFL holder in NY, when I went to the sporting goods store (Hermans?) at Cross County Shopping Center in Yonkers and was given this information, making me give up on it.

Thank God I’ve lived in more sane states like Alaska and Texas.

Thanks for the info. Just another reason to live in places where the individual is respected more than the government.

Cheers

OK, hypothetical here, what if the fed pops out an outrageous gun control bill, amounting to confiscation. What do you think the leadership in Texas, Alaska, etc. do? For example, will they refuse enforcement? Arrest federales? Will they trot out talk of secession? Will they mean it? Or do you think that as a class they will collectively cave and leave the dirty work to us “hobbits?” Just curious, since you’ve lived there.

But, ah, Mr. Fossil. I am a gun owner (.357 magnum). Bought it for home protection after being robbed. But I’m in California and the authorities here take a very dim view of any civilian carrying. So it stays locked up at home when I go out.

I don't think there is a chance they would go along with any type of confiscations. If the sale of type is banned, they would likely follow that.
