Opinion: The Rise and Decline of Mass Shootings

(March 1) -- When it comes to mass public shootings, the decade doesn't seem to be starting out too well.

Just two months in and already there was a shooting rampage in rural Virginia (which claimed eight lives), one at the University of Alabama (three dead) and other in Denver, near Columbine High School, in which two middle school students were injured.

But the fact is that, while mass public shootings always tend to galvanize massive media coverage, they are becoming increasingly less common, falling sharply in the last decade compared with the previous two. And understanding this decline is important to helping prevent future mass shootings.

Agreed. But try to get the ‘Rat parasite voter to understand that. Their minds have been rotted by government schools, reality television and video games.

The rise and decline need artificially created cutoff points.

The simple fact is that mass killings have happened all through history. Just last night my grandmother reminded me of a story from my great grandmother’s time about several children being killed in a one room school near Petosky Michigan around 1909 or so.

The numbers should at least be normalized for population.

How “mass killings” are defined is also relevant.

Tue enough, more people means more nuts and more targets.

Definitions of mass killings can be problematic. Wikipedia has them split into several categories that don’t always make sense.

On Friday one person violated the right to life of children by abusing the 2nd amendment. The entire press corps abused the 1st amendment by libel, misinformation, intrusion, speculation, photographing children and law enforcement and exploiting the fear and grief of every survivor.

The shooters are often white males in their 30s and 40s.

Not so terribly surprising in a country where the majority of the population is white. That will change as society's demographics change.

Contrary to the popular perception that these offenders "just snap," mass shootings are almost invariably preceded by a great deal of planning and deliberation.

Obviously, the killer has to make a conscious choice to take a weapon to a public place, and there's probably a lot of brooding beforehand, but the "one day he just snapped" idea is so widespread there must be some reason for it.

But the fact is that, while mass public shootings always tend to galvanize massive media coverage, they are becoming increasingly less common, falling sharply in the last decade compared with the previous two.

6 of the 12 deadliest mass murder incidents happened since 2007.

The author states two things:

1. The decline is definitely not due to an increase in gun ownership.

2. The decline is definitely due to pro-social factors, a complex web of ‘stuff’.

The fact is, this author put up some data and tried to bs the reasons behind the changes in the data.

How many mass shootings were there before the first gun control legislation was passed?

How many since?

berzerker
Berserkers (or berserks) were Norse warriors who are reported in the Old Norse literature to have fought in a nearly uncontrollable, trance-like fury, a characteristic which later gave rise to the English word berserk.
Berserkers are attested to in numerous Old Norse sources. Most historians believe that berserkers worked themselves into a rage before battle, but some think that they might have consumed drugged foods.
