Glenn Beck Defends Gay Marriage: Republicans Need To 'Expand Our Own Horizon'
Business Insider ^ | 12/11/2012 | Grace Wyler

Posted on 12/11/2012 9:48:27 AM PST by SeekAndFind

Conservative firebrand Glenn Beck has joined a growing chorus of Republican commentators in defending gay marriage, laying out a strong case for ending government opposition to letting same-sex couples wed.

"Let me take the pro-gay marriage people and the religious people — I believe that there is a connecting dot there that nobody is looking at, and that's the Constitution," Beck said during a recent segment of his online talk show. "The question is not whether gay people should be married or not. The question is why is the government involved in our marriage?"

While Beck's defense of gay marriage may seem surprising, given his far-right political views and audience, it is actually not new. Earlier this year, Beck said that he has the "same opinion on gay marriage as President Barack Obama" and does not see same-sex unions as a "threat to America."

Still, Beck's public renewal of his support for gay marriage comes at a politically significant moment for the GOP, which is working to reshape its message to appeal to a changing electorate. A Gallup survey released last week found that 53 percent of Americans are in favor of legalizing gay marriage, a number that has been steadily growing for the past decade.

Moreover, by couching his support for gay marriage in a libertarian framework, Beck makes the case for the right to look past differences on social issues in order to broaden their coalition to include all limited government conservatives.

"What we need to do, I think, as people who believe in the Constitution, is to start looking for allies who believe in the Constitution and expand our own horizon," Beck said. "We would have the ultimate big tent."

I’ve seen very few posters who have labored so persistently to ensure that their beliefs are incapable of being discerned.

And those few have pretty much all been trolls.

The quality of our trolls has suffered recently. Perhaps they’re all out shopping at the malls.

In the immortal words of Rodney King (rip) ... Can't we all just get a lawn?

IMHO, there are NO trolls on this thread. Just a failure to communicate. Big time. Part of the post-election fury at the GOP.

Oh really? Were we even discussing BELIEFS? Or were we discussing strategy and reality? My BELIEF is that America would be better if not a single person was in favor of gay marriage, let alone involved in one. My BELIEF is that gay marriage is wrong, for so many reasons. My BELIEF is that there are cultural consequences to all of us as a result.

I also BELIEVE that millions of Americans do not share those BELIEFS and that includes our current re-elected President, at least four members, and maybe more, - of the Supreme Court including the two youngest members, and probably 55 Senators or more. I have no ability to change this, and I BELIEVE that is true of you too.

Therefore, I BELIEVE that the best way to attack this issue is by way of the states, as well as avenues outside of politics altogether. I also BELIEVE there are other more immediate threats to our freedoms, and I BELIEVE that when we lose those freedoms, we will inherently lose this battle and ALL OTHERS by definition. This is one of the reasons I BELIEVE that the stte route is the best.

I also BELIEVE that this is a complicated and difficult legal and political issue even though I BELIEVE it is a straight forward moral issue. I BELIEVE it is reasonable to have this understanding of it. I BELIEVE in a free society we will never have the legal authority to demand that everyone BELIEVE as we do, since freedom icludes the freedom to be wrong, to a point.

I BELIEVE this was Becks’ point, though I do not KNOW for sure. I also BELIEVE that my BELIEFS are consistent with many others, including Ronald Reagan, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, and many fine Freepers. Again, I BELIEVE this is the case.

I also BELIEVE that some Freepers think gay marriage is the number one issue. I BELIEVE that is their right. I BELIEVE it is foolish and counterproductive for those who BELIEVE that gay marriage is the most immediate issue to condemn those who BELIEVE as I do as sell outs, RINOs, closet gays, closet pro aborts, and so on.

I believe some people we’ve elected are all of the above, but I BELIEVE it is absurd to assume that I, or Reagan, or Rush, or Palin, etc, to be such.
I also BELIEVE that it is intellectually shallow and bankrupt to do so.

And I BELIEVE that I have now made my self clear, though I BELIEVE I had already done so for anyone who was actually interested in having an adult conversation. And as stated, I BELIEVE this entire discussion was really about STRATEGY and TACTICS and not BELIEFS in the first place, and I BELIEVE that those who insist otherwise were looking for a fight, and not a discussion, from the get go.

I BELIEVE they sadly got what they wanted.

That was much more illuminating than many of your previous responses. Did you believe that my post was an attack on you? It was not.

You have taken obtuse to an entirely new level. Congratulations. I’m sure you’ll have this solved by lunch tomorrow, and that is a relief. Ping me when it’s done, and we’ll give you the next issue to handle, which I’ll expect by the New Year. Maybe the fiscal cliff. Or abortion. Damn you’re good, and I’m so glad we live on your planet Shallowtron, where issues are so easily solved.

You have taken obtuse to an entirely new level.

So, opposing the homosexual agenda is "obtuse"?

Recognizing that homosexuals WILL relocate to other states is "obtuse"?

I’m sure you’ll have this solved by lunch tomorrow, and that is a relief.

And what precisely is your solution? Do you just believe we should leave it to the states, hope for the best and assume that SCOTUS will go along with it?

Looks like CEW has found a new sparring partner.

Tell you what, I will referee this bout.

I have to judge CEW's response as a non response followed by a defensive insult. Wagglebee asked a legitimate question (punch) and CEW did not attempt to throw a legitimate counter punch, but instead attempted to block it with a personal invective which must be judged as a feeble attempt to hit below the belt.

Foul

Automatic loss of one point.

Damn you’re good, and I’m so glad we live on your planet Shallowtron, where issues are so easily solved.

Back handed compliment followed by insult to intelligence. Weak irrelevant counter punch which clearly failed to score.

Round 1 to Wagglebee.

Continue.

And Wagglebee unloads a flurry of short jabs.

Will CEW be able to deflect this sudden offensive and land a hard counter punch? Or will he resort to hitting below the belt and lose another point?

Stay Tuned.

I'm confident that he's perusing his thesaurus in search of insulting adjectives. He does seem to be far more comfortable with that than with actually answering questions.

It is very easy to discern that the homosexual agenda of normalizing their deviancy through "marriage" has to be ended at the federal level. Marriage in one state has to be recognized in all states. This is why DOMA is so important. The states that have passed laws banning homosexual marriage will ultimately be unenforceable if states have to recognize deviant marriages performed elsewhere. I believe the over riding rule is called the "full faith and credit clause".

Unfortunately this issue will end up in front of the SCOTUS and I'm pretty sure they will sell us out.

Tsk Tsk. Warning from Referee. No Fraternizing with Referee during the bout.

Hold all comments until the final bell is rung.

We eagerly await CEW's response to your quick jab flurry.

Give him time. He could actually come back with a legitimate counter punch. Keep your guards up. Both of you. This could get bloody. The EMT van is parked outside with the engine running just in case there is a knockout punch.

Well finally someone who can read. I never claimed to have a solution. Everyone kept asking for a solution, and no one could figure out that my whole point was there IS no perfect solution, and that all I had was a suggestion that was not perfect. Yet the circle jerk crowd around here kept saying I couldn't answer the question. My answer is that there is no perfect answer. Ignoramuses. Now, back to your gang rape.
