Michigan Town Woos Hollywood, but Ends Up With a Bit Part (Ganholm)

PONTIAC, Mich. — Even the great and powerful Oz could not save the film studio that was supposed to save this town.

The studio, a state-of-the-art facility fit for Hollywood blockbusters, had risen from the ruins of a General Motors complex here. It was the brainchild of a small group of investors with big plans: the studio would attract prestigious filmmakers, and the movie productions would create jobs and pump money into the local economy. A glamorous sheen would rub off on this down-on-its-luck town.

But in Pontiac, happy endings do not usually come Hollywood-style. The tale behind the studio, though, was cinematic in its own right, filled with colorful characters, calls from the White House and a starring role for Michigan’s taxpayers. Rounding out the cast was a big-budget Disney movie, “Oz: The Great and Powerful.”

It all started back in August 2007, when Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm met with Mike Binder, a Michigan-born actor and director who was lamenting the state’s lackluster program to award financial aid — otherwise known as film credits — to the movie industry. Ms. Granholm, an aspiring actress when she was in her early 20s, became determined to make Michigan competitive, she recalled.

Have no energy to argue with the NYT, Moleface, libtards, IRS, anyone else.

But will consolidate the notion that Granholm, a socialist governor of Michigan worked through huge incentives to make movies here.

Fine. But Moleface failed in that her Hollywood dreams missed the point. A targeted industry that would only help the progressive movement.

She gave tax breaks to the rich Hollywood only whilst flying off to foreign lands like Norway or something to get them to build stupid windmills because of global warming (union jobs) here.

Ignoring all the other industries here, like when Michigan had the manufacturing capacity to end WWII, and we did.

FAIL.

Michigan is about to become a right-to-work state in 72 hours or so.

Stuff it Granholm and your Hollywood grifters.

LOL!
Pontiac Michigan.
A union loving city built by cars and bars.

The strange hub of an incredibly culturally diverse, and exceptionally mentally deranged group of people.

A perfect example of liberals creating “jobs” by spending OPM. It doesn't work when you start with a flawed premise. Unbelievable.

They don’t have a reason for measuring success that endeavor and they won’t be willing to measure or be honest about how and why it failed.

That Right to work law was a case of too litle too late. Georgia’s “Hollywood” industry is doing OK and growing. Probably a good thing since the EPA, et al will probably destroy any claim to farming soon.

I see a bright future in film for Detroit. It is already prepared as a set for any post-apocalyptic movie being filmed. It could also be used as a set for towns that have been bombed and shelled.

Moleface would have been far more effective if she had simply cut taxes across the board.

In contrast I started a film company in OH 3 years ago and didn't get---or ask for---one dime of gubment money. We completed our first film, "Rockin' the Wall" on time and on budget (www.rockinthewall.com) and sold it. Our distributor paced it first with PBS where it is airing now and with Dish beginning Jan. 1. We are already early done with our Scond project "Other Wals 2 Fall" with Clint Black, Yanni, and Busta Rhymes (go to www.rockinthewallstudios.com for the trailers).

Tax credits work against small, up and coming companies because the only kick in at $350,000---above the price of films lie ours. So Clooney sweeps in and gets $3-4 million for "Up inthe Air" but leaves no keast n infrastructure, while mop anise such as mine that DO operate here see none of the $$$ ---not that we mwant it. I'd prefer all the credits go away and let's get Nestor's who believe n the movies and the make good, profitable films.

Michael Moore's 'Greed' Message Doesn't Apply to His Film's Financiers

"These are large, multinational corporations — Viacom, GE, Rupert Murdoch — that own these studios. Why do they need our money, from Michigan, from our taxpayers, when we're already broke here? I mean, they play one state against the other, and so they get all this free cash when they're making billions already in profits. What's the thinking behind that?"

- Moore

Eric Sherman, a film industry expert in Los Angeles, said film incentives have become an accepted part of business plans that movie makers pitch to studios.

"I don't think he could have raised the money (for "Capitalism: A Love Story") without commenting on tax incentives," Sherman said. "And Michigan has been known to be one of the most favorable states to offer tax incentives."

Moore's publicist didn't return an e-mail seeking comment. A spokesman for Paramount didn't respond to a request for comment.

PT Barnum couldn't hold a candle too Moore when it comes to fleecing the people but at least PT Barnum gave people the choice of blowing their money or not.

Grandmole gives the scam studio 18 million out of the state workers pension fund, for her insane ‘blown-away’ dream.

12 jobs were created.

Had to listen to that stupid bioch’s promise for 8 years, then she skips town without blowing anybody I know.

The worst thing would be letting a leftist borrow it to check his email and getting Cheeto scuff marks on it.
