TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Now that the city of Topeka has approved the 2012 Uniform Public Offense Code, openly transporting a loaded firearm in your car will be legal. The new ordinance takes effect next Monday, December 10, according to City spokeswoman Suzie Gilbert.
"Shawnee County allows the open transportation of loaded weapons, but the city of Topeka had up to now, prohibited that," Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller said. In most of the State of KS, that's the same way. You can transport a firearm, in cars loaded."
Others say it could only lead to trouble.
"My main concern is children. There are children that ride in cars as well. A loaded gun with children in the car, is not a good thing."
"It's fine in the county, but in the city it makes me worried for my safety, and my kids safety, bc we dont' bring loaded guns into town."
"Is this an idea l situation 5:53? absolutely not," It's a compromise solution, Miller said.
To appease both advocates of the second amendment and those who want to see more gun control city staff worked with local Second Amendment advocates to allow law-abiding citizens to carry loaded guns in their vehicles, but ban gun possession by those who commit crimes.

Since Kansas is a pheasant hunting state, I thought everybody had a loaded shotgun in their trucks during pheasant and quail season.......and likely a rifle for the rest of the year... Oh wait, maybe that’s only in the farming communities where people mind their own business.
What good is an unloaded gun?
In Texas, there is nothing in any firearm statute that mentions a loaded or unloaded firearm or the proximity of ammunition and firearms.

Where I grew up everyone had a gun rack with 2 or 3 guns.
Now they would get stolen.
Oh the children! Ever notice how when liberals and would-be fascists (but I repeat myself) want to control us they trot out "the children." Of course, how could anyone be against kids, right? Yes, obviously a loaded and unsecured firearm around children is a bad idea. SO DON'T DO IT! But don't try to take away my rights by banning everyone from doing it. Don't try to be a nanny state and legislate good parenting, good behavior.
"It's fine in the county, but in the city it makes me worried for my safety, and my kids safety, bc we dont' bring loaded guns into town."
Because so much more violent crime happens in rural areas rather than urban areas, right? Wrong. In a city is exactly where you want defensive firearms.
"Is this an idea l situation 5:53? absolutely not," It's a compromise solution, Miller said.
If I read through the typos correctly, I assume this person is worried about road rage. Sure, that could happen. But even without a firearm that potentially unstable person has a couple tons of steel and a couple hundred horsepower at their disposal. If someone flips out, they are going to do damage and harm, with or without a firearm.
In Colorado you can have loaded firearms in your vehicle including rounds in the chamber - except long guns. (rifles & shotguns) They can be loaded, but nothing in the chamber. That actual goes back to hunting laws.
Is this chick admitting she doesn’t have her children buckled in?
Isn’t that a tad...unsafe? Illegal? Hmmmm
"for the children" is political pedophilia.
