I think most folks here were discussing the possibility of a peaceful, negotiated secession. Obviously, none of the states has the resources to challenge the US militarily. In fact, Louisiana has been receiving more in federal dollars than it has been paying in federal taxes so it would probably have to raise state taxes to make up for the deficiency. Then it could begin raising taxes still further to mount a military defense.

That plan needs a lot of work. Just moving to another country makes a lot more sense.

A good idea on its surface, but my family was here while the colonies were forming and were in Texas to help make it a Republic, and I, for one will not be run off by a bunch of tin-plated dictators.

I'll bet a lot of Indian chiefs said the same thing.

Well, my blue state, New York, is mostly red. Only the area’s surrounding cities are blue. There are so many states like this. The greater land masses are red. What to do, what to do? The cities that are blue get all the bennies.

It wasn't federal property, it was property held as surety by one State to ensure the performance of the other States to the compact.

When the northern States failed to perform, the Notice of Secession caused the property to revert to the States that initially held it.

In actuality, it was being unlawfully occupied by federal forces, and that's why it was fired upon.

Neither of these rules has been adopted. Each State in ratifying the Constitution, is considered as a sovereign body independent of all others, and only to be bound by its own voluntary act. In this relation then the new Constitution will, if established, be a federal and not a national Constitution.

If one defines "compact" as a voluntary agreement, one entered into willingly, as I would assume Madison was using the term, then it doesn't apply to the Republic of West Florida. The area involved was not part of the original Louisiana Purchase, but was proclaimed to be so, unilaterally by Madison in annexing the territory in 1810. Spain technically held possession (and to some degree, liability) for much of the territory 'til they fully and formally ceded it to the United States in 1819.

The citizens there had staged their own little rebellion against the Spanish, and declared their independent republic, having as much right to do so as the U.S. did in the war for independence. William Claiborne, who eventually became the first Governor of the State of Louisiana, showed up to enforce Madison's annexation, to which the Republic relented. It may have been a de jure "compact" but it was "consensual" in the same sense that a child bride in a muslim wedding consents, the consequences of not "consenting" being particularly ugly.

Well, that is assuming the US military could be used to suppress an insurrection. Maybe the National Guards could, but who would they side with...Obama or their home state?

Personally I'd like to see certain states kick their filthy RAT cities out of their state boundaries. Then the cities could link up.

Secession has only been “settled” until it’s done again. Didn’t have permission the first time. And if we secede here in Texas, no one is going to attack us.

Curiously the donkey party is near comatose in the swamp state. Every state level position is now GOP. One Senator and one representative (from the Afro rotten borough of the 2nd Congressional District) are dems. Republicans now control both houses of the legislature and in spite of rubbing some republicans the wrong way Gov. Jindal has unleashed a stealth campaign to really crush two pillars of the donkeys, teachers union and state employees. He has used a state budget deficit to unilaterally make big cuts in the physical size of the state hospital empire and has one of the big publics, Earl Long, in Baton Rouge on the road to closing and transferring the state share to a non profit Lady of the Lake Hospital. Every opportunity the state has to knock out the public school monopoly by instituting charter schools is done. it is spreading from New Orleans to other parts of the state by using the ‘failing schools’ escape clause to institute charters. Jindal tried getting some stuff through the legislature but found the higher education empire was too entrenched so he just uses the ‘sorry no money’ approach and lets the educrats figure out what toe to amputate. The swamp state sucks in a lot of ways but I have really grown to like Bobby jindal master of swamp state political stealth.

I want you to tell Governor Perry that the US will attack for three reasons:

1) The Constitution requires that the laws be faithfully executed;

2) See 10 USC Section 333; and

I’m surprised the left hasn’t latched on to the secession idea as a way of “curing” the national debt, avoiding student loans, sticking it to those evil credit card companies, sticking it to the evil USA Banks, etc. In theory The People’s Republic of California, for example, could just walk away from all of it and not honor any contracts/debt. Of course, I’m pretty sure international finance boys would frown on such behavior, but it might be Gov. Moonbeam’s only hope! Sure it’d be a rough couple of years as a financial pariah, but what Democrat doesn’t want a get out of jail free card? Secession wouldn’t be much different than a national Chapter 7. Party it up with spending and entitlements until 2020 and then let the suckers in Texas, Oklahoma, etc pay for the party.

Correct. Secession is possible. The south had successfully seceded before the US attacked. So all we have to do is make sure the US does not attack.
