The Hive

Obama won. Weak opponent. Weak campaign. But there is a huge change happening in American society that will dominate future politics and elections.

America was once a rural and conservative society. After some change American became a more urban a and politically balanced society. Then the growth of suburban America led to a couple of decades of more conservative society. But inevitably, America is becoming a more and more urban society. The majority of the population lives in vast metropolitan areas.

In urban society, humans, living in close proximity to others, are forced to control their lives to minimize negative impacts on each other. Urban societies become more and more regimented. Ultimately, in some huge, densely populated cities (c.f., Tokyo, Beijing, etc.) humans become so regimented that they behave like ants or bees in a hive.

I fear this is our future. The freedoms that we cherish will inevitably be lost in an America dominated by its large cities.

"In urban society, humans 'rats, living in close proximity to others, are forced to control their lives to minimize negative impacts on each other. Urban societies become more and more regimented. "

Exactly.

When 0bama talked about “fundamentally transforming America,” what the communist meant was destroying the prosperous, independent, Republican-voting suburbs. We can’t have the sheep roaming the free range. They might get ideas, and as Stalin said, “Ideas are more dangerous than guns. We don’t let people have guns, why should we let them have ideas?” Thus, the sheep have to be herded into the corral of the big cities, where they will be poor, dependent, and reliably democrat.

Cheap energy is what makes suburban living possible. Eliminate it, and you herd the sheep. Watch the energy policy in addition to the job-crushing economic policies. It’s a pretty clear goal, and the sheep were too stupid to figure it out.

Thanks for the graphic on the left by county. Shows exactly where the corruption happens. Not all but close enough.

Romney certainly wasn't my first choice by a long shot, but he wasn't a weak candidate. He could have turned the economy around, and was probably the most moral man running period. Stop the blame game.

A famous experiment reported at length many years ago in Scientific American studied the behavior of rats as the population density increased. The rats behaved in a much more-corrupted manner than at low density: they turned to homosexuality, eating their young (their abortion), and other depravities.

I think this comment may ironically point towards a possible direction out of this for the conservative movement. We need to see our cities for what they really are: testaments to the power and greatness of free market capitalism. Commerce built our cities and commerce is what makes the difference between a thriving city and a decaying one. Look at South Korea and North Korea, or Burma and Malaysia. Socialist countries feature drab, dying cities devoid of activity, whereas capitalist countries feature massive, congested, thriving cities teeming with activity.

The Left just acts as parasites on our cities, and if they are allowed free reign, eventually turns them into places like Detroit and Oakland. Businesses are squashed, criminals allowed to run wild, and the populace becomes increasingly dependent on government handouts. We need to develop an urban vision for conservatism that recognizes how important free market capitalism is to building and maintaining a thriving urban culture; we don’t need to retreat to rural redoubts of conservatism and cede this entire territory to the Left.

Very good point. I think that overcrowding in the “hive” leads to a much higher incidence of mental illnesses and substance abuse. Lenin’s vision of the Soviet Union was much like the “hive.” And look how well that went. People turned to alcohol and drugs (that’s where meth was invented). People didn’t care about what they did. Old Soviet saying: “As long as the bosses pretend they are paying us, we will pretend we are working.” Look at our own inner cities. Your average 0bamaphone owner isn’t living the most ordered or regimented life. Just plug “Ghetto fight” or “Chuckie Cheese fight” into a You Tube search and you’ll find out.

The hive won’t work because we aren’t ants. But that’s what they will try to do.
