California voters may have just handed Democrats unbridled control over taxes as well as policy, but party leaders from Gov. Jerry Brown on down immediately pledged to exercise restraint.
Although final tallies are not official, it appears Democrats will hold at least a two-thirds supermajority in both the Assembly and Senate.
That gives them the ability to pass taxes and fees, and place initiatives such as same-sex marriage and bonds on the ballot without securing a single Republican vote.

Red States to bail out California?
There finished it for you.
its not just Kaiser a lot of them have Blue Shield.. its the policy it’s premium not something us peon’s get.
“Naturally, the federal government will not allow a bankrupt California to crash and burn into anarchy.”
They will have a hard time getting a bailout thru the house. A lot of R’s that vote for it would be primaried. Maybe the fed will find a way to assume Calif’s debt.
Yup. Instead of the “don’t tread on me” snake, it has a
giant turd that says “eat me”.
Cesspool
Oops. Thanks!!! Spelling has never been the best for me.
“We” just voted to give heroin to a heroin addict. The dems in Sacramento and places like LA and SF cannot get enough. In a year they will need more to feed their addiction.
WE will have more illegals, more kids runing around, more public funding of health care for the illegals, and our roads and infrastructure will be another year worse off. On top of fewer businesses, continuing above the national average unemployment, and strangling environmental regulations.
I think I will ride the high speed rail all day, listen to NPR, and just become a mind-numbed robot; a Californian thru and thru.
Wish I could get the kids and grandkids out, but only one of them sees the problem.
Yes. However I believe republicans would have won these states anyway. So it’s anecdotal evidence. Now if WI had voter ID...that would be a different story.
California is totally screwed!
What if Obama uses an executive order to bail out Cal? Yes, I know he is not supposed to do that, but the Constitution won't stop him. After that, one would think that more states would get in line, and there would be no good reason for a state to be fiscally responsible.
You could be right. A lot of houses are under water right now.
“The new law affects out-of-state corporations...”
Thank you! Did not know that.
Guess what???
An apartment building is considered Commercial property.
Therefore—every RENTER will pay a higher rent because of a change in Prop 13 restrictions.
Those fools who don’t own their residential location and think they voted to ‘stick it to the rich’, will be paying substantially higher rents.
Many small businesses also HIRE those same apartment dwellers.
When their job gets dropped because the boss is having to pay a higher rent on the business building-—cry me a river!!!
California proves over and over again that you cannot fix stupid.
When I moved to Nevada County in N Calif, the registered Repulicans were about 87% of the voters. When I moved out in Dec of 2004—the Republicans were about 34% and falling.
One of the reasons why I left.
Explain, please.
Are you saying vendors from out of state must pay taxes in Calif if they sell to Calif?
If so—I would tell such vendors to stop those sales. OR-—jack up the prices accordingly ++++++.
IF they remove Prop 13——wait until Hollywood people get their new tax bills.
Streisand will pop an coronary!!!!
James Brolin will be back on the bachelor market!!!
Being from California I agree. The faster these elevated thinker zombies realize that all of the good life stuff will disappear when the revenue train slows down even further due to massive business shut down. It will be interesting to see how many small businesses shut down with this retroactive sales tax the Mexicans voted for.
Cuomo already told Obama that Sandy aone will be $6 billion.”””
$6 Billion???? I am hearing estimates as high as $50 Billion. Most of those private homes will not be able to be rebuilt. Asbestos—off their foundations—mold-—you name it. We are talking about complete teardowns & 2 years ++ of delays & permit problems & EPA approves to rebuild the home you already had.
May I recommmend a special tax on all recipients of those CalPERS retirements, especially those who have chosen to flee the state and spend their golden CalPER retirement in Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Mexico, Costa Rica, etc.”””
California already did that for years.
It was struck down in Federal Court some years ago.
It is ‘taxation without representation’....simple as can be.
