Obama campaign now buying ads in Detroit!!

Via Mark Halperin and Jim Geraghty, who points out that Detroit's TV market doesn't reach Ohio. This is all about defending Michigan, which would have seemed crazy a month ago but now, in a world where The One is under 50 percent in Oregon, makes lots of sense. This is, after all, a state capable of electing a Republican governor (by a landslide) and a Republican legislature, and there's a native son at the top of the GOP ticket. The last poll of Michigan --- taken one week ago --- showed a dead heat. I wonder what those Hopenchange internal numbers are showing right now. From Halperin:

An Obama aide tells me this on the Michigan ad buy:

"Restore Our Future went up with a $2 million buy in Michigan. We’re matching states where they go up. We’re not going to let them make a play anywhere."

Both sides have enough money for these end-game ad forays. The real issues remain candidate time/visits, the psy-ops involved here, and the belief of some Republicans that a combination of Minnesota, Michigan, and Pennsylvania could surprise on Election Day.

My only question: How likely is it that any of those three states comes through for Romney if Ohio doesn’t? And if Ohio comes through, why do we need any of those states? Seems like maybe the Romney Super PAC’s ad buy is less about stealing Michigan to capture the presidency even if Ohio falls through than it is (a) forcing Obama to divert money to a formerly “safe” state, and (b) increasing the odds of a big red wave if there’s a final small tilt towards Romney nationally (or regionally) over the next seven days. In that case, he wouldn’t “need” Michigan to win but it’d be lovely to have it as proof of a mandate to govern, and that’ll come in handy in twisting Democratic arms during those fiscal cliff/deficit reduction negotiations.

Elsewhere in “painting the map red” news: Romney just went up with his first ad in Pennsylvania, a state that ABC moved from “safe Democratic” to “lean Democratic” just yesterday — along with Minnesota. In the northwest, Team Mitt may be eyeing not only Oregon but even Washington state(!) as having turned more purplish than anticipated. And here’s a new ad from Citizens United that’s going up in Wisconsin and New Hampshire — a.k.a. Romney’s Plan B — but it’s not aimed at drumming up GOP turnout. In fact, it’s airing not on Fox News but on CNN and MSNBC. When you watch, you’ll understand why.

He doesn’t think Detroit is a given? His campaign is in worse shape then anybody is willing to admit. ;-)

The writer misses a possibility

Maybe the Republicans are buying ads in Michigan because they think they can win the state. There is a good argument for not just winning but winning big. This is not a football game where running up the score is unsportsmanlike. Romney needs to win big because that will force the left to shut up. One of the reasons Reagan could be Reagan was because nobody doubted he won the election.

Additionally if the demonrats have to pad the vote in Michigan and Minnesota then they run out of stooges to cheat with in Iowa and Ohio

Doesn’t MI have a large number of Muslims living there? I’m pretty sure that Mitt won’t get their votes.

They’re worried that the kool-aid drinkers are too apathetic to turn out on November 6th...

Where Romney spends money, causes Oblank spend his dwindling funds.. Spreading his wealth to drive to the finish, when they are watching the close, somebody with money left has the advantage..

I think both of those are valid. If the Rats are spending huge voter fraud resources (both bodies and money) in Detroit, just to make sure they take Michigan, there will be that much less available to carry out their fraud in neighboring states.

With several members of the black leadership referring to the Prez as “Bath House Barry”, and encouraging others to ‘stay home’ on election day, it is surprising we haven’t seen panic ads here in Rahmabad.

Wow.. running ads in Detroit smells like desperation.

What’s the point? The popular vote?

Neither side has a money advantage at this point. Obama is getting all kinds of money from god knows where and we will never know. But he won’t be outspent. Another article provides more sober reason for Romney expanding the map. Quite frankly he has more money than there is air time in Ohio and Wisconsin.

Detroit media market covers parts of eight counties, so it is much more than Detroit or Metro Detroit (tri-county) for that matter. Lapeer, MI (also Flint market) ~ Livingston, MI (also Lansing, Flint) ~ Macomb, MI ~ Monroe, MI (mostly Metro Toledo) ~ Oakland, MI ~ St. Clair, MI (thumb doesn't have strong media) ~ Washtenaw, MI (Ann Arbor uses Detroit media market) ~ Wayne, MI.

The Detroit TV doesn’t reach into Toledo? Aren’t they only about 40 miles apart?

No. Michigan is about 1% Muslim.

It can reach Toledo, but Toledo has their own media market, which also overlaps parts of Michigan, mostly Monroe and Adrian.

California, NY and NJ top the list for muslim population in the USA. I believe Minnesota also ranks higher than Michigan. Last I knew, Michigan ranked 6th.
