Indiana GOP Senate candidate stands by rape comment
Chicago Tribune ^ | October 24, 2012 | AP

Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock is standing by his statement that when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape "that's something God intended." He says some people have twisted his comment.

Mourdock said in a news conference Wednesday that he abhors any sexual violence and regrets it if his comment during a debate Tuesday night left another impression.

Mourdock, who's been locked in one of the country's most expensive and closely watched Senate races, was asked during the final minutes of the debate whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest.

"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen," Mourdock said.

Mourdock became the second GOP Senate candidate to find himself on the defensive over comments about rape and pregnancy. Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin said in August that women's bodies have ways of preventing pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape." Since his comment, Akin has repeatedly apologized but has refused to leave his race despite calls to do so by leaders of his own party, from GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on down.

1 there is no problem with not having a “pair” but not using what is between the ears.

2 It is ridiculous to be “pouring his heart out” in a political campaign. This is not The View. He isn’t running to be Mr. Open Heart but a US Senator. Surely he is not totally BLIND to the fact that the Enemamedia will seize on such statements and bludegeon the GOP with them. Why hand weapons to our enemies?

3 It does not matter how insane these RATs are the Enemamedia does not cover it but every slip by the GOP is trumpeted. This remark was not a mere slip but one of those things which turn political events around. It is unbelievably damaging.

For NO good reason.

We’ve stacked the decks against ourselves with F-ups like Scott Brown who is happily declaring that he’s ready to reach across the aisle at the earliest opportunity.

I agree - repubs have to be VERY deft in their handling of the media. And even then I don’t think they can avoid intentional media deceit.

I’m tired of it and they are the ones who are pathetic.

They need to form a new "moderate" party or we do. Lets see how the northeast moderate party does without conservatives.

It ain't the baby's fault. Clearly, the demonic democRats want nothing more than to kill more babies.

Mourdock spoke the truth to power.

His demonicRat opponents are bound and determined to kill as many babies as they can.

The only idiots I see are the pusillanimous fools masquerading as FReepers and Republicans.

I have a niece who is a product of rape.

She’s the one a call “the good one” because she’s survived a bout of liberalism in college and has found her conservative roots.

“This remark was not a mere slip...”

Never said it was a slip.
We’ve been talking for years about how conservatives have to have the balls to speak their minds. When they do, and say something that the left can pounce on, they are called everything but politician.
If the polls are correct, and there are more people who care about life than don’t, and care about rule of law than don’t, then what the hell are we afraid of?
Yes, we need to take the senate and the oval office. But I’m all for seeing our representatives as they are.
We see the loony left as they are all the time. Most actually detest them.
It’s a matter of people getting to the polls and voting. We have them outnumbered by a long shot.
Look at all the hand wringing over Akin. Look where he is now. He WILL win. He stood up against the machine and I believe he will claim victory over it.

Mourdock’s mouth hurts the Pro-Life cause.

This is not a theoretical, political issue. When you see a child who was conceived in less-than-ideal circumstances, do you see the spawn of the devil, or do you see a precious life that was created by God?

What we see absolutely impacts everything we will do in our life. If I look at Muslim kids and see them as the spawn of Satan it will impact everything I think and do regarding those kids. If their daddy is a terrorist, does that mean that the child was never meant to exist? Or is that life precious - created and intended to be redeemed and sanctified for Himself just like I have been created, redeemed, and sancitified for Him?

I don’t see Mexican citizens, ambassadors to Libya, and abortion survivors as piles of human tissue that serve a political purpose. I see them as precious people that God intended to live, and I see the taking of those lives as stealing from the One to whom those lives belong. Obama sees those people totally differently. So which way will you see them? Why should we be afraid to enunciate the view of life that allows us to NOT be just like the Jerk-in-Chief?

Saying that God is the author of life and that He brings good out of bad is NOT a “slip”. It is the very core of what a lot of us believe and are. And it is what ultimately offers ANY hope for those who are caught in difficult situations.

Why are we so afraid of giving people truthful answers to life’s problems? Because the author of death might fight back? Of COURSE he’ll fight back. That’s what life is - a battle between the author of life and the author of death. The author of life has already won. There’s no way I’m going to pretend to be on the losing team, when simply displaying the winner for all to see can offer life and hope to a hurting world.

Pusillanimous fools pretending to be conservatives hurt the Pro-Life cause.

Backstabbing morons joining forces with democRats in the press to attack conservative politicians hurt the Pro-Life cause.

The Pro-Life cause would be better off if pusillanimous fools and backstabbing morons would STFU.

What Mourdock fails to grasp in his moral handwringing, is that the moral dilemma is not his, but an innocent rape victim's, in the hypothetical situation.

Here, unlike the ordinary situation, where a woman has volitionally engaged in conduct that resulted in a pregnancy--where society may reasonably expect her to accept the consequences, and nurture the baby;--Mourdock is deciding that the rape victim's humanity is less important than allowing the rapist to perpetuate his line through her humiliation & tribulation.

Nothing could be better calculated to undermine the legitimate arguments against abortion, than such absolutist thinking. Something, here, obviously, has to give. In the hypothetical situation, it should certainly not be the body of the innocent victim, against her will.

If WWII happened, God ALLOWED it to happen. Doesn’t mean he WANTED it to happen. If God WANTED WWII to happen He would not have commanded us not to murder. He allows people to make their choices even when it is against His will - in rape just like in concentration camps. Rape is not God’s will. Concentration camps are not His will. He’s told us that outright.

But the creation of a new life is separate from rape, and only God can create new life. Even when we manipulate all the factors to try to cause conception - in a test tube or elsewhere - sometimes life will be created and live and sometimes not. Anybody who has struggled to conceive has had to wrestle with God over why He gives or withholds the creation of life. When it happens - every time - it is a precious gift. Sometimes it causes great pain, just like a lot of things cause great pain. But life is worth pain. So many people have learned that, and learned to bless the day that God gave them better than they even knew to ask for.

How does a child conceived after rape threaten a woman’s humanity?

The left is trying to make this into an Akin style statement. It is not. He was expressing his beliefs against abortion and reinforced that he does not support the exception for rape. This is not an uncommon position. I believe Paul Ryan maintains the same position. Romney hedges and supports exceptions.

I concur that he would be better off not saying anything that can be twisted and mangled by the left. He should have said less. What he said is not an Akin moment, though.

They tried to get Ryan on this a few weeks ago with no success. Mourdock and others can learn from Ryan how to maintain campaign discipline.

When he wants to write a book of revelations do not do it while running for the Senate.

Isn’t he aware of the traps laid with the abortion question? Doesn’t he know he has to be extremely precise in making statements in that area? Didn’t he see how the enemamedia distorts such remarks?

It is not a winning position to force raped women to bear children. Or to even imply such a thing. That makes them little more than slaves.

Nor does everyone have the same religious views of such things.

During the times the Church controlled things that may have been possible but not now.

Look at all the hand wringing over Akin. Look where he is now. He WILL win.

Rasmussen has it McCaskill 51%, Akin 43% as of October 19.
