France is set to ban the words "mother" and "father" from all official documents under controversial plans to legalise gay marriage.
The move, which has outraged Catholics, means only the word "parents" would be used in identical marriage ceremonies for all heterosexual and same-sex couples.
The draft law states that "marriage is a union of two people, of different or the same gender".
It says all references to "mothers and fathers" in the civil code – which enshrines French law – will be swapped for simply "parents".
Justice Minister Christiane Taubira told France's Catholic newspaper La Croix: "Who is to say that a heterosexual couple will bring a child up better than a homosexual couple, that they will guarantee the best conditions for the child's development?"
"What is certain is that the interest of the child is a major preoccupation for the government."
The head of the French Catholic Church Cardinal Philippe Barbarin warned followers last week that gay marriage could lead to legalised incest and polygamy in society.
"Gay marriage would herald a complete breakdown in society.
"This could have innumerable consequences. Afterward they will want to create couples with three or four members. And after that, perhaps one day the taboo of incest will fall."
Leading French Catholics have also published a 'Prayer for France', which says: "Children should not be subjected to adults' desires and conflicts, so they can fully benefit from the love of their mother and father."
And Pope Benedict XVI invited 30 French bishops to Italy to urge them to fight against the new law.

Enough of the slippery slope! This thing is a civilization-ender regardless of whether it "leads to" anything else. It redefines marriage/family as gender-indifferent; in other words, the very understanding of "parents" as FATHER and MOTHER disappears. Children henceforth have only "caregivers," though the "care" part is just a linguistic throwback to another age.
I prefer PARENTAL UNIT.
It just sounds so much more.... 1984. Furthermore, all children should be referred to as BIOLOGICAL EXTRUSION.
And if the mother and father are merely “caregivers” that opens up the door to the government to be “caregivers”. This whole thing is sick.
Birth certificates specify “male” or “femelle” for infant’s sex. There is a space for “mère” and “père”.
This is a radical departure from French tradition and culture.
Mme. Taubira is the second most hated woman in France, after “ first mistress “ Valerie Trieweiler aka “la Rottweiller” who is presently clawing her way into TV via her powerful “companion” President François Hollande. She is trying to force her own TV show.
IMO, this also makes it much more acceptable to take children from their birth parents. Everyone is now equal, so who cares if the child has the original parents or not. As long as they have two “whatever” or even one “whatever”, everything is okay in bazaaro world. And if you object as a Christian, YOU’RE the problem. Watch the book get thrown at you.

I don’t care what anybody says, a child is better off with a mother and a father. The sexes are different psychologically, and both influences are best. It won’t always be the case, but it is the ideal.
Of course they are banning “mother” and “father” from official documents. They are doing their utmost to preserve the French language...therefore you can only use “la mere” and “le pere” in official documents..
In other news, the French Revolution mandated a 10-day week, a 10-month year, 10 zits per teenager. . . (okay, I made that one up) How's that working out for you Godless surrender monkeys?
This is the country where a woman married herself within the past few years so nothing is surprising.
Is there any hope that parliament can hold this up or block it? I gather that it hasn’t yet passed. And I gather that François Hollande is increasingly unpopular.
Let’s hope it doesn’t go through.
