Secret recordings made by British intelligence during the Second World War have revealed for the first time the horrific atrocities carried out by everyday German soldiers.
For years the blame for horrific war crimes, rape and genocide were laid at the hands of the SS and Hitler's right hand men but a new book details how widespread the barbarity went.
Transcripts taken from hidden microphones on prisoners of war have been collated for the disturbing book Soldaten: On Fighting, Killing and Dying: The Secret Second World War Tapes of German POWs.

How do we even know that even a shred of this story is true? Can any of it be verified? It sounds like they are trying to shake down the German taxpayer to save the Euro using the old guilt question of WWII. Enough already!

I am am American of German descent. My grandfather was a hero in WW2, in the Pacific because of the surname he passed on to me. He, like myself was all Akerican. He was a US Marine and he was SEMPER FI!!!
I think we mostly called them The Hun for propaganda purposes, but there was some underlying truth to it. Something in the German culture that is not as prevalent in the American culture.
Always good to be suspicious about this sort of thing, but it seems a researcher on WWII U-boats noticed these overlooked transcripts, and has been working on a book, since 2001.
Some of the transcripts were in British archives and many were in Washington, DC.

In the past 2 decades, I’ve noticed an unfortunate trend,
that of denigrating anyone of German descent, including
those here as being suspectible to committing atrocities,
more than people of other backgrounds. This is not borne
out by history; atrocities, though not of the Holocaust
type, have been committed by peopl of all races and cultures,
the latter being the more operative factor. I’ve never
found anything that’s adequate as a response. This meme,
or whatever you call it, could not have been enunciated
in the first post-war decades, bc there were too many
people, veterans and others, who knew better. This comment
doesn’t satisfy me, but I wanted to post something.
You throw it one way they are happy beer swilling louts, the other way they are ruthless killers.
This is something that is happening in America. How many black on white crimes are rationalized as victims lashing out? Every gradeschooler “knows” America is a destructive force in the world. Under the correct circumstances ordinary people can rationalize terrible crimes. This isn’t a German problem.
Excellent reply and you didn’t even mention the Little Black Book of Communism. With 100 million killed in the 20th century you’d think we’d have learned that it isn’t genetics, but bad ideas that kill people.
