Feds turn tables on Florida Gov. Rick Scott, deny storm money
Tampa-St. Petersburg Times ^ | September 22, 2012 | Toluse Olorunnipa

TALLAHASSEE — Time after time since taking office, Gov. Rick Scott has boasted of rejecting billions of dollars from the federal government. Now, Washington has turned the tables, shutting down Scott's plea for financial aid in a move that almost instantly took on political tones.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency refused Scott's request for a presidential declaration of disaster for damages caused by Tropical Storm Isaac, declining to provide $26.9 million in aid to hard-hit counties.

Scott moved this week to appeal the decision, but not before the issue was cast in a political light, highlighting Florida's importance in the presidential election and the rocky relationship between Washington and the Sunshine State.

.....[Chris] Fugate [FEMA director], who served as director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management from 2001-09, this week let Scott know his request had been denied.

Fugate's letter stated that the damage was not severe enough to require federal aid, and basically argued that Florida could handle the costs on its own.

The rejection is the latest dust-up in a tenuous relationship between Scott and the federal government.

Shortly after coming into office, Scott rejected more than $2 billion in federal funds aimed at building a high-speed rail line. Obama criticized Scott for the snub, saying he thought it was "wrong."

Scott helped support the U.S. Supreme Court challenge to Obama's federal health care reform this year. When the Supreme Court upheld most of the law in June, Scott said Florida would not accept billions of federal dollars to expand Florida's Medicaid rolls.

Scott also has battled Washington over early voting changes and purging noncitizens from the voter rolls.......

Thanks Cincinatus’ Wife. Zero just lost Florida, or knows he’d already lost it.

"And how does this help Obama win Florida???"

I live in North West Fl. and have yet to see an Obama yard sign. I'm sure I could find some downtown but I haven't been there lately.

Maybe Obasma" internal polls tell him Fl is lost to him anyway so he might as well stick to to Scott.

The GOP needs to stop giving the Dems political fodder...and the GOP needs to stop the “Socialist when we feel like it” nonsense

lol. Good luck with that.

At this time wouldn’t it be correct to call it the Feral government instead of the Federal government?

With posters like you who needs Dem political fodder?

Just tellin’ like it is. To be a Conservative....you must go beyond the “R”. Rick Scott is no conservative...heck his business existence was based on how much government money he could take in (Medicaid, Medicare, Socialized Medicine)

Seriously, why does Florida -- or ANY of the energy-rich southern states -- need the Federal government? Provide for the common defense? What a joke.

The Southern states could secede all but in name, and it would be FedGov who would be hurt, not them.

I don't chuckle at your comment. When the dollar crashes, doctors leave their practice, and health care is 100% operated by the government, does anyone think political affiliation will not be considered?

I convinced an apolitical mid-twenty something last weekend that Hussein and the rat party were abusing her generation and her only possible hope for a prosperous future was to dump all things democrat. We must all keep at it.

I doubt the Republicans in Florida are SMART ENOUGH to play this right (they certainly aren’t generally), but a SNUB like this can drive Florida straight into the Republican camp in November.

But that takes some guts, and...

On the other hand, the Republicans have pointed out this snub (or I wouldn’t be reading about it), but do they have the apparatus to see it through?

Hey, E….

It is always good to hear from you.

I am totally sick and scared for you good people in the U.S. of A.

Although we are doing fine in Panama, it does not make me sleep any better at night worrying about my country.

I have no idea how this is going to turnout. I don’t have high hopes. The cheating is going to be outrageous in favor of the bastard if we get to elections. (Actually, I can’t vote since I am not a resident of any state. I made that choice. I did not want to pay state taxes just to vote once every two years.)

Should Romney win, what plans does the Chicago mafia have to continue staying in power? Or maybe they will try and make their move before elections.

Thus far, it appears every one of the bastard’s plans to grab complete power has blown up in his face.

If you need to escape, Panama will greet you with open arms.

If you have pets, they are welcomed too. They will need certain shots to get into the country. There is no quarantine period as there was years ago...six months...awful. There is no need to leave your extended family behind. There also some good vets in Panama, and it will not cost you a zillion dollars every time your pet needs to see the doctor.

You can have firearms in Panama. Buy them here. There is too much legal paperwork involved to ship them with you. It is also a very long process. It is not worth it. Just sell them, and purchase your new firearms here.

Take care and the best to you.

M, do I have to declare any Girl Scout cookies I bring with me to bribe my host? ;)

Thanks for all the helpful info. Please pray for America—it is scary how many people are so uninformed about Obama and what has been occurring these past four years.

Take good care of yourself.

“.......who don’t have deep pockets like the feds).”

The Left has worked long and hard to sew those deep pockets to the Federal Gov. suit. Those deep pockets weren’t in the Constitution, and have to be removed, and put Uncle Sam right back where he belongs as subservient to the people.

Obamugabe did the same thing to Oklahoma a couple of years ago when that state was hit by floods....

Oklahoma was the only state in the union not to have a SINGLE COUNTY vote for his socialist ass....so guess what--he refused to send any federal help their way.

Obamugabe is a miserable, thin-skinned, pathetic fascist. We must fire him without hesitation in November.

The Obama Admininistration also refused to send aid to VA after the earthquake of Aug 2011. AND refused permits to drill off-shore that would help our energy independence.
