TORONTO An American soldier who sought refuge in Canada after she became disillusioned with the Iraq war has been ordered to leave the country by today.
Kimberly Rivera has said she will comply with the Canadian governments deportation order and leave the country with her family, but that hasnt stopped her supporters from hoping for a last-minute intervention.
Theyre calling on Immigration Minister Jason Kenney to halt Riveras deportation, arguing that the mother of four will likely face a court martial and jail time upon her return to the U.S.
Kenneys office has said the federal government doesnt believe the U.S. subjects its soldiers to persecution.

She told reporters last month that her biggest fear about being deported is being separated from her young children and having to sit in a prison for politically being against the Iraqi conflict. No, honey, you will sit in prison for desertion.

Typical she got all the benefits she could and when it came time to do her duty she ran. She's a thief and a coward and should be jailed immediately for a very long time!!!

I thought the punishment for desertion in time of war was death by firing squad. Or is it hanging?

In the late 80s, I was driving cross country and heard a news report that if we had another war, Canada would no longer be a hiding place for our deserters. The all volunteer force was the big reason they changed the law. Of course the reality of our Vietnam War deserters not being “our best and brightest” probably helped with that.
It seems one could do web research on Canadian laws before putting their entire future in the hands of stupid lib beliefs.

You are correct; our Vietnam-era policy reflected US policy during the first two years of WWII. We admitted draft-dodgers but deserters were extradited on request.

So true! I remember just after Carter gave his speech restoring Selective Service registration listening to a talk show on a Canadian radio station. The callers were absolutely apoplectic about another wave of American hippie slackers coming to overrun their country.

Try her for desertion, then put her in front of a firing squad.

Was Clinton a draft dodger of sort? Honest question. Not trying to start rumors.

This person voluntarily joined the military.

Was Clinton a draft dodger of sort? Honest question. Not trying to start rumors. He was never charged but, basically,he was.IIRC his ability to avoid service was partially due to luck (the draft lottery) and skillful gaming of the system that involved deliberate lying to an Army Colonel (Colonel Holmes).I don't recall all the details but I think that basically how it went.
