Former Vice President Al Gore called for an end to the Electoral College tonight.
"It's always tough to amend the constitution, and very risky to do so," he said on Current TV, which he co-founded. "But I think its time, I think our country would be stronger and better if it went according to the popular vote."
In the 2000 presidential election, Gore won the popular vote but lost the electoral to George W. Bush.

Sounds like somebody knows Zippy ain’t getting 270...
The goreacle probably wants it to be retroactive.
Mr. Sex-Poodle hisself............
Algore should not be allowed to give his opinion on anything.
If Democrats were to do this in November, they will lose. With the completely exciting 2008 (for the Dems), they still only managed 53 percent. There is NO WAY they will get even close to that this round. There only hope is the electoral. Al Gore is one dumb guy. Although it would be nice to get rid of it just for 2012. I know we will win popular vote but not at all convinced we are going to win electoral so this might just be in our best insterest to say ok Dems lets give it a shot for this election only....
Just what we need...the East and West Coasts ruling us.
this just in....Steve Bartman calls for the elimination of the Fan Interference rule in baseball...
Same with Fred Thompson and former Michigan GOP chair, Saul Anuzis (Saul is running again BTW)
In other words, he supports voter fraud.
Here's my answer to the Algore ~ they go to "popular vote' then voting will become mandatory in Virginia. Plus we'll let folks vote via absentee ballot in each county and in person at each precinct.
I"ll put that VIrginia vote total up against the best New York, Texas and California combined ~
Getting rid of the Electoral College will mean turning over the presidency to about five of the most populated states. That was the reason for the EC, so that wouldn’t happen.
Al Gore has already given us the reason NOT to let go of the electoral college.
We do not need to have our rural areas give up even more power to the cities where they send food and energy.
Of course. If one were to look at past voting-by-county maps, he/she would see that probably a dozen (certainly less than a couple) comprise more than half the population of this country. These are ALL urban locations demographically infested by liberals, illegal immigrants and largely, victim groups. In short, they comprise a classical democratic majority, and their perverted ideals would rule over this country as Obama rules by Executive Order, against the US Constitution.
Without the Electoral College, interests of lesser populated regional areas that form this Union would be ignored. If you want mob rule, then you’re for a popular vote.
I say we just give him a lifetime free-meal pass to FatBurgers, Five Guys Hamburgers, or the Heart Attack Grill.
All Gore should spend less time in the Artic; his brain seesm frozen.
Oh, good Lord! Hasn’t he blown up yet? He looks like an illustration from “Froggie Goes A-Courting”.
In other words, given the opportunity, the Dems know they can manufacture enough fraudulent votes to steal elections if that messy Electoral system were simply taken out of the mix. Dems don’t like it when the “fly over States, (read states that don’t have enough potential for vote fraud) are given a say in government. In his mind, only New York, California, Illinois and the other states that are so stuck in debt they may never get out, are much wiser in terms of who should govern and should, therefore, be given exclusive power to decide who wins and who loses.
Of course he does. That way our elections will be decided by new york, los Angeles, and Chicago.
Really AL!?!?!
I am of the opinion that the electoral college needs to be strengthened. Namely by altering the Constitution so that each congressional district determines it’s own electoral vote. The vote awarded to the candidate that receives a majority in that district. If no majority, then a run off 30 days later between the two candidates with the most votes. The remaining votes (2 per state) would be awarded to the candidate that receives 55% or more of the vote. Otherwise, split between the top two candidates.
Further, require citizenship, photo id, and proof of residence to register. Purge the voting rolls Feb 1st following a Presidential election. Require photo ID to cast a ballot or hold as a provisional ballot until right to vote can be verified. Require that all ballots be turned in for counting no later than 2 hrs after the last voter has been cast and allow no other ballots to be accepted after that time.
Sadly, Fred Thompson is on this too.
No can do. The electorial is mandated by the Consitution.
3/4 of the states have 20 Electoral votes or less. You need 3/4 of the states to ratify an amendment. 3/4 of the states aren’t going to vote to screw themselves.
RE: All Gore should spend less time in the Artic; his brain seesm frozen.
Respect, more respect, this is a Nobel Prize winner you’re talking about...
Same with Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama, Nobel winners all !!
Or as I call them, Yankees and Laker’s fans.
Does Al Gore realize that if the electoral college wasn’t in effect in 2000, he might have lost anyway? Bush would have devoted a lot of resources toward getting every last voter out in Texas and other states that he had in the bag.
It’s possible Obama might lose the popular vote and win the electoral college this year. Some polls are suggesting that’s the case. If that does happen, Obama would have won fair and square.
Wasn’t tehre some controversy over whether Algor actually did win the popular vote?
Changing the way we tally votes will not be a static change to the way we vote. it will radically change the way people campaign, and will motivate a different set of voters.
Changing the EC to be mandated winner-take-all in many states was supposed to be good for the Dems as opposed to a proportinal EC, but things changed after that move, now it’s not so much an advantage.
I understand that chickens want an end to KFC, Popeye’s, Chick-Fil-A and Church’s.
I think his decision to protest the electoral college by eating until his bodyweight matched the number of electoral votes demonstrates how serious he is about this.
Laws like that used to be on the books until the late 1930's. The problem is that it, itself, enabled corruption. A little sabotage from one party that delays the delivery of ballots from a particular district and....I think you see why we did away with it. In today's world it would come in the form of DOS attacks or cut lines instead of hijacked vehicles, but the result would be the same.
Poor Al. The moron doesn’t understand WHY we have the electoral college. The boy just isn’t very bright. Give it a rest, Al. Your days are past.
Given the amount of fraud in places like Philly and Chicago, and the fact that absentee ballots were never counted in the deep blue states, Gore may very well *have* gotten fewer legitimate popular votes than GWB.
He wouldn’t be saying this if he thought 270 was a slam dunk for Obama.
I’ll trade you - first repeal the 17th amendment and I’ll consider it.
That’s just ludicrous. That would make a Wyoming citizen’s vote worth 46 times that of a Texan’s. Your solution goes to far in the other direction and creates a system that is even more unfair.
Whatever algore wants is always wrong. FU ALGORE
Two of the many components that make someone a Liberal are:
1. Total lack of historical knowledge.
2. Complete ignorance on the Constitution and why it was specifically written the way that it was.
Gore. He has these.
And Chicago.
The next thing the Dems will start proposing is to reduce the number of Senators. Why should Wyoming have the same number of Senators as California? Their goal is simple: total control of the system and the masses; in other words - TYRANNY!!!
Who gives a rat’s hindquarters what the hypocrital Fat Algore thinks about anything? He’s been so wrong about so much since about 1990 that if he claimed that the sky was blue, I’d look up just to check it out.
Its about time for another snowstorm to cancel one of his Globull Worming speeches.
Liberals hate it that we have 50 independent and sovereign states with powers outside of the Federal Government.
This “end the E. College” stuff is another just another step to dissolve the states.
That's the funniest thing I've read in weeks.
The call to end the Electoral College pops up during elections for America’s president....’ol Al just can’t resist trying to get his name in ink is a given, so using that tactic as no one has asked him to do anything he is shouting under the political shower. Wipe the sweat off the shower door when you leave Al...............
