Cops Rough Up and Handcuff 15-Year-Old Girl for Using Her Student MetroCard
New York Magazine ^ | Caroline Bankoff | 08/04/2012

The NYPD is investigating an incident involving the roughing up and handcuffing of a 15-year-old girl for using a student MetroCard officers believed was not hers. (Spoiler: They were wrong.) On July 26, summer-schooler Alexis Sumpter was waiting for the A train at 125th Street when two plainclothes officers — who had apparently seen a turnstile light indicating a student card had been swiped — approached her and demanded to know her age.

When Sumpter could not produce an ID, the cops called her a liar and summoned a third officer, who "[pressed] her face against the wall while the two others cuffed her" while saying they "didn't owe an explanation" for the harsh treatment. They then called Sumpter's father, who vouched for her age, but the girl was only uncuffed and released when her mother brought a copy of her birth certificate to the station. There, officers finally explained their reasoning, which was that her daughter "looked like an adult." Take note, teens: There are some disadvantages to looking older than your age — especially when you live in a city with a very, very aggressive police force.

And so if she did; the occifers should have counted that par for the course and not cared. The card’s worth money? Not if tied to a user. The cops could not say they cared about this and also claim they did not care about that.

If the head nanny stater Bloomberg is doing outrageous abuses of power it is not surprising the lower ranking nanny staters follow his lead

I bow to your cinematic expertise.

Still, if this is a worry, why not put the user’s picture on them.

You are so right. I stand corrected.

A group of us went through voter registration training for Texas residents last week and then a judge appointed by Obama got involved and ruled against our current procedures. He thinks anyone anywhere should be able to register people to vote in Texas, not just Texas residents who are trained. Not sure if Abbott is going to appeal or not. Pretty touchy issue right now with some of us.

Just imagine what they would have done if she was holding a big gulp soda.

Meanwhile the real criminals like this guy are running amok.

I believe it because the biggest crime in NYC is to jump a a turnstile.

And this “non arrest” custody with handcuffs sounds hokey. If you are not free to go you are arrested.

_________________________________________________________

Likely she was “detained” but not arrested. Not finger printed and thrown in a cell. Whatever it was it was wrong.

Lets say the card was stolen or expired. If she had gone to court for a $1.00 misuse of a subway card, in otherwords the same as a stolen token what would her punishment be? Nothing. A warning at most not to do it again. But getting your face smashed up agains the wall and having cuffs on for more than about 60 seconds is more punishment than she would have received by any court, many times over. The little girl, and she was just a little girl, was abused and will never forget it. She will never have any respect for cops nor will any of her friends and family.

Too, too many cops abuse their powers and throw around their power of intimidation because they can. It is sick what they did to this poor little girl, it is wrong. I hope the cops that did it are fired and never allowed to wear a badge again, ever. Every cop should be a good cop or fired, period. There should never be a second chance for abuse of authority.

Not sure. Her name is Alexis. What black girl who is 15 would be named that? Now if it was Kenisha or something like that, okay. And also, no group has come out yelling racism. Ergo, she must have been white. But then, what white girl would be taking the subway? Alone?

from the looks of her picture in post #9, one who's family makes a fairly good living...

I used to keep my subway pass in a outside pocket where I could grab it easily. My wallet and other valuables were kept in an inside pocket as I rarely needed to get them out until I was at my destination.

Let me see if I’ve got this straight. If you are suspected of stealing half the fare for a ride on the train, you MUST SHOW a Birth Certificate, but if you want to be President of the United States it racist for anyone to even mention one.

Hmmm - now how to we lure Barry to take the subway?

I was thinking along the same lines - no wonder Obama doesn't use the subway! No B.C.

She’s likely hearing from a gaggle of hopeful lawyers now.

I hope so.

Sorry, don't buy it. She looks very much 15-16 years old.

What they meant, though they were too stupid to realize it, was that she didn't look like their idea of a black teenage girl. I hope they legally get Louima-ized over this.
