Reading the News, What Dylan Songs Come to Mind? [Vanity]

Bob Dylan may not be appreciated by all the folks here at FreeRepublic, but I’ll bet he is by a great many.

What songs, lyrics, or phrases of his do you find going through your minds these days as the news in America becomes darker and more twisted?

This is a tad bit off topic, but since you brought up Dylan...

I really enjoy his songs, except for his frequent use of “ain't”, which for some reason really grates on me. And that's VERY ironic, because my own grammar is quite poor.

Anyway, I remember hearing someone sing Dylan's “It Ain't Me Babe.” But she sang it as It's Not Me Babe.” It was beautiful, but I can't remember who the singer was. Any ideas?

I think Bob Dylan gets a bad rap among conservatives. I believe that Bob Dylan is himself a rabid conservative. He just can't say it out loud because he still wants those smelly, aging hippies to buy his records. Can't blame him for that.

Consider the time of Woodstock. Bob Dylan lived near Woodstock and could probably have walked to the show if he wanted to perform. But Bob Dylan wanted nothing doing with the "gathering storm of hippies" that were sure to infest the area. So he got the hell out of Dodge. And good for him.

How do you get rid of frizzy hair? Anyway, here is one of my favorite Bob Dylan lyrics...

Shadows are fallin' and I've been here all day
It's too hot to sleep and time is runnin' away
Feel like my soul has turned into steel
I've still got the scars that the sun didn't heal
There's not even room enough to be anywhere
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there.

I’ll probably get flamed big time for this, but I’ve always felt Dylan is the most overated singer/writer in modern times. However ...this line,
“Yes, I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes.
You’d know what a drag it is to see you.”
has to be THE line that always brings a smile/smirk to my face. :)

“Man of Peace”

Look out your window, baby, there’s a scene you’d like to catch
The band is playing “Dixie,” a man got his hand outstretched
Could be the fuhrer, could be the local priest
You know, sometimes Satan, you know, he come as a man of peace

He got sweet gift of gab, he got harmonious tongue
He know every song of love that ever has been sung
Good intentions can be evil, both hands can be full of grease
You know that sometimes Satan come as a man of peace

Well, first he’s in the background, then he’s in the front
Both eyes are lookin’ like they’re on a rabbit hunt
Nobody can see through him, no, not even the chief of police
You know that sometimes Satan come as a man of peace

Well, he catch you when you’re hopin’ for a glimpse of the sun
Catch you when your trouble feel like they weigh a ton
He could be standin’ next to you, the person that you’d notice least
I hear that sometimes Satan come as a man of peace

Well, he can be fascinating, he can be dull
He can ride down Niagara Falls in the barrels of your skull
I can smell somethin’ cookin’, I can tell there’s goin’ to be a feast
You know that sometimes Satan come as a man of peace

He’s a great humanitarian, he’s a great philanthropist
He knows just where to touch you, honey and how you like to be kissed
He’ll put both his arms around you
You can feel that tender touch of the beast
You know, sometimes Satan come as a man of peace

Well, the howlin’ wolf will howl tonight, the king snake will crawl
Trees that’ve stood for a thousand years, suddenly will fall
Wanna get married? Do it now, tomorrow all activity will cease
You know, sometimes Satan come as a man of peace

Somewhere mama’s weepin’ for her blue-eyed boy
She’s holdin’ them a little white shoes and that little broken toy
And he’s followin’ a star
The same one them three men followed from the east
I hear, sometimes Satan come as a man of peace, oh yeah

Thanks, Dartman. No flaming here ... there are a lot of folks who agree with you on that.

What's great about that line is that the whole song "Positively 4th Street" was written by Dylan as a "screw you" anthem to the group of Marxist hippies he used to hang out with in the East Village of New York City.

Yes, how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky ?
Yes, how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry ?
Yes, how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died ?
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
Bob Dylan rocks! Saw him in concert in the 60s. Thanks for the thread. The above could easily apply to abortion today.
